Porodica Delphinidae u Jadranskom moru

Cetaceans are divided in two suborders: baleen whales (Mysticeti) and toothed whales (Odontoceti), which we differ in body shape, jaws, skull etc. This paper presents a brief overview of whales found in the Adriatic Sea, with emphasis on a detailed description of species from the Delphinidae family. In the Mysticeti suborder, the Fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) and Humback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) are mentioned, one as a seasonal and the latter as an accidental visitor of the Adriatic. The species that reside in the Adriatic which belong to the Odontoceti suborder are: bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) and Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus). The common dolphin is known to venture into the Adriatic rarely, most likely in search of food. It is classified as a regionally extinct species. Sightings of false killer whale and long-finned whale (Pseudorca crassidens, Globicephala melas) are rare, so it is assumed that those were isolated cases of entries into the Adriatic.
