Glavna zadaća usluga društvenih mreža je međusobno povezivanje korisnika. Korisnici se povezuju na temelju zajedničkih interesa, uvjerenja ili aktivnosti. Kako bi povezivanje korisnika bilo što uspješnije, usluga društvene mreže mora "poznavati" svakog svog korisnika. Svoje korisnike najbolje upoznaje preko informacija koje oni sami ponude. Jedna od bitnih informacija je informacija o korisnikovom geografskom položaju. Ideja geodruštvenog umrežavanja je povezati korisnike s drugim korisnicima sličnih interesa, ali uzimajući u obzir i lokaciju svakog korisnika. Tako se komunikacija iz virtualnog svijeta može prenijeti u stvarni svijet. The main task of social networking services is connecting users. Users are connected on mutual interests, beliefs or activities. To connect users more successful, the social networking service must "know" each of its own user. Best way of knowing its own users is through information offered by useres themselves. One of the most important information is the information about the user's geographical location. The idea of geosocial networking is to connect users with similar interests, also considering user's geographical location. That way communication from the virtual world can be transferred to the real world.
