Experimental study of the behaviour of columnar grained ice subjected to cyclic loading

When subjected to cyclic loading, polycrystalline ice exhibits a non-linear, hysteretic, elasto-plastic, and time dependent behaviour. The results of a series of stress controlled cyclic uniaxial compression tests as well as a series of repeated compressive creep tests are reported in this paper. Al...

The results of a series of stress controlled cyclic uniaxial compression tests as well as a series of repeated compressive creep tests are reported in this paper. All tests were conducted on fresh water transversally isotropic columnar grained S-2 ice samples. The methods used to make ice, prepare the samples, and testing are described. The loading path histories followed during testing and test results are presented. The main objective of this experimental work is to investigate the response of polycrystalline ice to loading, unloading and reloading conditions. The test results are analyzed to highlight the characteristic features of the observed mechanical behaviour of polycrystalline ice subjected to stress reversals. The aim is to build a base for the development of a visco-elasto-plastic model that is capable of describing the behaviour of ice subjected to any stress path, including cyclic loading.
