Historical record of sea ice and iceberg distribution around Newfoundland and Labrador

An historical record, from 1810 to 1958, of sea ice and iceberg distribution around Newfoundland and Labrador has been compiled for the winter months, January to April, charts have been drawn, and the areal extent of the sea ice calculated. The data have come from a variety of sources, particularly shipping journals and gazettes such as Lloyd's List and the New York Maritime Register, from log books and diaries, and more recently from the International Ice Patrol (IIP). Many of the ship reports recorded incidents with ice. A chart showing the locations of iceberg ship collisions around Newfoundland and the Grand Banks is shown. After 1959, sea ice charts for this regions are readily available. The ice extent from these recent maps has also been calculated and the time series from 1810 to 1988 is presented.
