Measurement of impact forces on sea ice

This paper reports the results of impact tests conducted on first year sea ice in Resolute Bay, Northwest Territories. The instrumentation was chosen to ensure the capture of signals at the instant of highest dynamic load. Tests were conducted at impact velocities from 1 m/s to 3.4 m/s. Independent...

The instrumentation was chosen to ensure the capture of signals at the instant of highest dynamic load. Tests were conducted at impact velocities from 1 m/s to 3.4 m/s. Independent measurements of global acceleration, local contact force, and depth of penetration were made. Peak accelerations up to 400 g's were observed, and local forces on a contact area of .712 sq. cm gave pressures as high as 60 MPa. The peak impact events had rise times of 200 micro seconds to 880 micro seconds. The acceleration and local contact force were determined as functions of time and depth.
