Summary: | Under contract to Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Works, Services and Transportation, the Institute for Marine Dynamics was requested to provide information on ice conditions in Conception Bay with particular reference to conditions in the Bell Island Tickle that would affect transportation links. Since one of the options being considered was a fixed link with a movable span to allow ship traffic or icebergs to pass through, the most severe ice condition that the link would encounter was considered to be that in which icebergs or bergy bits were present amidst a substantial coverage of sea ice. In such cases, not only would the ice loading be a threat to the structure and foundations but the presence of sea ice would prevent the bridge span from returning to its original position after having been opened to avoid impact by icebergs.
