In an earlier paper on the skin of the North Atlantic Balaenopteridae (1907), I briefly described the structure of the hair and showed that the earlier concept of the whale hair as a rudimentary organ wholly lacking in nerves is incorrect, and that on the contrary, it is very abundantly supplied with nerves. Closer examination, especially of the nerve end apparatus of the hair, was already being contemplated at that time and was to include the toothed whales as well, which had not previously been taken into account. The present paper presents the results of my studies of the hair of baleen and toothed whales, which have now been concluded.
