Ice rubble consolidation

The tests were done with model ice (representing sea ice) and with freshwater ice. In total, sixteen experiments were performed in which several test parameters were varied including ice piece size, air temperature and ambient wind chill. Both the measurements and the samples cut from the rubble show variability in the rate at which the freezing front advances through the rubble. The average depth of consolidation in the rubble, however, appears to be linear with respect to the square root of the freezing index (i.e. the product of the freezing temperature and freezing time). For the test conditions used, the rate of consolidation of the broken ice rubble was approximately twice as high as the growth rate for level ice under the same ambient conditions.
