Du sable de quartz, saturé à une teneur en eau de 20%, gelé sous une température de -30 degrés C, et déformé sous différentes vitesses de déformation, a montré des comportements viscoplastiques, presque parfaitement plastique, et fragile avec peu de plasticité, sous des vitesses de déformation croissantes. Les valeurs de résistance de pic observées pour des vitesses de déformation entre 5 X 10[-7] et 6 X 10[- 3]s[-1] étaient de l'ordre de 15-42 MPa, la contrainte étant reliée à la vitesse de déformation par une équation de puissance.
