The installation consisted of pipe piles, 169, 323 and 458 mm in diameter and 3.3 m long. Each pile size was replicated three times on the same site, and all piles had separate reaction frames anchored to bedrock. For the first winter, when the thick gravel layer that was placed over the site was allowed to freeze to the piles, high uplift forces were measured. The pile was isolated from the gravel in the two subsequent winters and the adfreeze values corresponded more closely to those determined previously. Des études sur les forces de soulèvement qui s'exercent sur des pieux creux dans des argiles à varves gélives ont été effectuées à proximité de Thompson, au Manitoba, au cours de trois hivers consécutifs. L'installation consistait en des pieux creux de 169, 323 et 458 mm de diamètre et de 3,3 m de long. Trois pieux de chacune des dimensions ont été installés au même endroit et tous les pieux comportaient des cadres de réaction ancrés dans la roche de fond. Le premier hiver, après avoir étendu sur le sol une épaisse couche de gravier qu'on a laissé geler jusqu'aux pieux, on a mesuré des forces de soulèvement importantes. Les deux hivers suivants, on a isolé les pieux du gravier et noté des valeurs d'adhérence due au gel correspondant davantage à celles mesurées anté rieurement.
