Its apparent satisfactory performance after nine years of occupancy suggests that the concrete pier and spread footing foundation used can be a practicable alternative to embedded foundations for large heated structures in permafrost regions. Ce mémoire décrit la construction d'un bâtiment de deux é tages à charpente d'acier sur un pergélisol, à Churchill ( Manitoba), de 1948 à 1950. Les auteurs discutent la performance du bâtiment en fonction des techniques de construction utilisées. Comme cette performance paraît satisfaisante après neuf ans d'occupation, on pense que le pilier et l'empattement de béton utilisés pour la fondation peuvent remplacer efficacement les fondations encastrées des grands immeubles chauffés, construits dans les régions de pergélisol.
