| Summary: | This paper gives a brief history of permafrost investigations in North America starting with the observations of early explorers. In more recent years a concerted attempt has been made to deal with the problems resulting from construction and transportation in permafrost regions. Expeditions down the Mackenzie River led to the establishment of a small research lab. at Norman Wells. The work of the Geological Survey of Canada all over the north is well known. Selection of the new townsite of Inuvik and the new town of Thompson, where a nickel mine is now in operation, are recent projects that have greatly enhanced our engineering knowledge of permafrost beyond what existed when the Alaska Highway and the Hudson Bay railway were built. La présent étude constitue un bref historique des études de pergélisol en Amérique du Nord à partir des observations faites par les premier explorateurs. Au cours des dernières années un effort concerté a été déployé pour venir à bout des problèmes résultant de la construction et des transports dans les régions pergélisolées. Les expéditions menées vers l'embouchure du fleuve Mackenzie ont conduit à l'é tablissement d'un petit laboratoire de recherches à Norman Wells. Les travaux de la Commission Géologique du Canada à la grandeur du nord canadien sont bien connus. Le choix d' un nouvel emplacement urbain pour Inuvik ainsi que la nouvelle ville de Thompson, où une mine de nickel est aujourd'hui en exploitation, sont des exemples de travaux ré cents qui ont grandement amélioré nos connaissances techniques du pergélisol au-delà de ce qui existait lorsque la route de l'Alaska et le chemin de fer de la Baie d'Hudson ont été construits Peer reviewed: No NRC publication: Yes |
