Les sous-grès shisteux de la carrière à Alert, Ile Ellesmere, T.N.O., Canada, possèdent, on a trouvé au moyen d'essais de changement de longueur, un potentiel réel pour provoquer la dilatation du béton par un genre de réaction alcali-agrégat. Ces roches sont physiquement saines mais dé montrent des affinités pétrographiques avec des roches expansibles à l'alcali connues des provinces maritimes. Les roches de cette espèce peuvent étre identifiées par un pétrographe familier avec ce genre de problème.
