This translation is the third arranged by the Permafrost Subcommittee of the Associate Committee on Soil and Snow Mechanics of the National Research Council of Canada, of the Russian permafrost publication, "Principles of Geocryology". The first section of this translation of Chapter VII by I.Ya. Baranov discusses the global distribution, with emphasis on the U.S.S.R., of seasonally frozen ground. The largest portion of the text deals with the distribution of permafrost throughout the world. It includes information on the areal extent, thickness and temperature of permafrost, and variations in these characteristics from one physical region to another. Ce document est la troisième traduction consacrée à l'ouvrage russe intitulé « Principes de géocryologie », qui est demandée par le Sous-comité du pergélisol du Comité associé de la mécanique des sols et de la neige du Conseil national de recherches du Canada. La première partie de cette traduction du chapitre VII, écrit par I.Ya. Baranov, expose la répartition globale des sols gelés saisonnièrement, mais concerne principalement les sols de l'U.R.S.S. La plus grande partie de l'ouvrage traite de la répartition du pergé lisol à travers le monde.
