This translation of Chapter IV by P.F. Shvetsov reviews the various ideas of the origin and nature of permafrost which have been developed since the nineteenth century. Following this review, the current concept of permafrost as a condition arising from a negative heat balance in the ground is discussed. Ce document est la deuxième traduction consacrée à l'ouvrage russe intitulé , qui est demandée par le Sous-comité du pergélisol du Comité associé de la mé canique des sols et de la neige du Conseil national de recherches du Canada. Cette traduction du chapitre IV, écrit par P.F. Shvetsov, passe en revue les diverses hypothèses, formulées depuis le siècle dernier, sur l'origine et la nature du pergélisol. La suite présente une discussion de la théorie courante du pergélisol selon laquelle ce phénomè ne serait dû à l'existence d'un équilibre thermique négatif dans le sol.
