Ice strength was found to be a function of test system stiffness if results were analyzed on the usual nominal strain rate basis. The implication of this finding on both laboratory testing and the interaction between floating ice and structure are discussed. Les auteurs effectuent une série d'expériences, les unes sur des échantillons identiques avec différents appareils d'essai, les autres sur des échantillons de géométrie différente avec le même appareil, afin de montrer que la rigidité du système d'essai modifie tant le comportement avant la rupture que le mode de rupture dans la glace. Les auteurs constatent que la résistance de la glace est fonction de la rigidité du système d'essai lorsque les résultats sont analysés sur la base conventionnelle de la vitesse de déformation nominale. Ils étudient les répercussions de cette observation tant sur les essais en laboratoire que sur les interactions entre la glace flottante et une charpente.
