Summary: | Bibliography:pages [64]-65. Conventional reflection seismic surveys contain both reflected and refracted data. During analysis the refracted data are usually ignored. These data contain valuable information about the seafloor and the upper part of the sediments. A basic method for this type of analysis was developed by C.P. Ervin and others in 1983. This study improves on this method by development of a computer algorithm for: 1) determination of arrival times of the refracted waves, 2) correction for dipping beds, 3) compensation for the offset of the refractor location from the ship's position, and 4) providing a contoured, velocity cross-section that may be readily interpreted. The speed of this technique permits time for analysis rather than calculation as is the case in traditional, manual methods. As an example, a profile crossing Georges Bank, northwest Atlantic Ocean, is examined using the automated method of analysis, thus demonstrating the utility of the applications cited above. M.S.
