[Nate Dlgre photo] Cable brings the cinema home by Greg Ulland Have you ever yearned for the shows of yesteryear? For those times when "Leave it to Beaver" and "Gomer Pyle" were tops? Have you ever missed a show at the theater and given up hope of ever seeing it? Have you ever wondered what was happening in the news, but only had a few minutes to spare? Ever wonder what a National Hockey League game looked like on TV? The variety is ample with cable television. As the selction on network television had become increasingly repetitious, alternatives to CBS, ABC, and NBC have grown in stature. Stations such as CNN adn TBS now present viewers an op-tion in their viewing. A manager of Horizon Com-minication, the cable supplier in Moorhead, commented that a re-cent court decision on the East coast should benefit Cable TV even more. "This particular case dealt with whether there could be a number of (cable) channels in one city," he explained. "The courts apparently allowed it." This decision, the manager feels, will cause harm to the local broadcasting station. Additional' alternatives will draw from the network audience. In Moorhead, subscription to Horizon has increased by 1100. Employees at Horizon feel that the general age bracket of viewers ranges from 20-35. An employee commented on what reasons she saw for the increased in sub-sribers. "I think, generally, people are better aware of cable," she stated. "They want a better selection of programming. This is because viewers have become selective in what they want to watch. Programs Cable makes available to viewers include a 24-hour newscast, a 24-hour sportscast, re-runs of box-hit movies, and re-runs of television shows that have since gone off the air. At Concordia, the televisions in the lounges of Brown, Livedalen, and East Complex have cable ser-vice. For the most part, students who make use of cable seem to enjoy the variety of programming that is available. Mike Schafer, of Erickson Hall, commented, "I en-joy the old re-runs. The old shows are better or more fun to watch. The sports channel is good also." Fred Stelter, of Livedalen, said he enjoyed the movies available. "It's a cheap form of .entertain-ment," he added, Some students living off-campus also have cable service. Rick Clayburgh and his room-mates have cable because the wir-ing was already there. Clayburgh stated that the news network is good and feels the Atlanta station (TBS) is extremely good. As to why he doesn't have Home Box Office (HBO) installed, he ex-plained, "If we had gotten HBO, we would have been watching all day." While some students interview-ed said they would rather read a book, a look into Grant Lounge as "Gomer Pyle" plays on TBS in-dicates cable does have its share of viewers. The dinner menu contains a wide choice of combination plates such as the "sampler platter" which includes shrimp, lobster, and snow crab legs or the "shrimp lovers platter" featuring three shrimp dishes. For those who like to avoid the deep-fat-fried syndrome, the "broiled fisherman's platter" con-taining lobster, fish fillet, shrimp, scallops, and deviled crab is recommended while non-fish eaters can order from a selection of steaks. Dinners range in price from $5.49 to $12.50. If those prices pinch your pocket, try the luncheon menu. Served everyday [including Sun-days), the luncheon specials range in price from $2.99 to $4.59. Although these specials lack com-bination plates, a soup and sand-wich special, broiled shrimp scam-pi, and "popcorn" shrimp make this menu equally tempting. Be sure to taste the hush pup-pies if your selection includes them. A rather southern treat, these are spicy, fried cornbread cakes exclusively served at Red Lobster. And, save room for a slice of key lime pie. Made with select limes from a region in Florida, this dessert will remind you of summer. For soup lovers, there is New England clam chowder, creamy and rich, but not the least bit "fishy" tasting. Basically, anything you choose at Red Lobster will be good, but not always outstanding. The spices and seasonings in every dish are predetermined, leaving no room for creative cooking but at the same time, little room for er-ror. There are times you are reminded Red Lobster is a chain restuarant such as receiving your cocktail and tartar sauce in little prepackaged containers. Due to the necessity of freezing the seafood, orders sometimes lack the texture of freshly caught seafood. However, a popular item on the menu, oysters in the half shell, are always served fresh. Not only is the menu large, but so are the portions. Chances are slim you will walk out of Red Lobster hungry. Red Lobster has a pleasant at-mosphere and a large capacity. It is one of the few restuarants that can accomodate large groups with ^ase. Opened on February 10, 1981, Red Lobster has met with success in Fargo-Moorhead.
