Summary:14 The Concordian October 30,1992 Campaign from 10 This is proven by the fact that he is using federal agencies to investigate Clinton and Perot. This attack on the others is not a new trend for Bush. In the 1988 election he aimed his judgements at vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Feraro. This year, Bush is not only attacking the other candidates, but the democratic Congress as well. These character attacks are not necessarily mudslinging, said Anderson. However, he believes they are not working with the voting public. According to Anderson, at the beginning of the Republican campaign President George Bush did a strange thing, he attempted to distance himself from his presidential record, and from Vice President Dan Quayle. What makes Bush and Clinton's approach even more exciting for the voters is the fact that Perot is stirring things up on both sides. Perot, like Clinton, is sticking to the issues. He is proposing hard-lined action and establishing himself as a problem-solver. He is also using the fact that he has not previously been involved in politics as a positive aspect of his character. Perot's actions thus far, except for his surprise withdrawal from and reappearance in the race, have been orchestrated, according to Anderson. The appeal Perot is using, though not very wide, is "the man of the people" appeal. In all, Perot's presence will draw votes away from both parties, but it appears as though he may be helping Clinton and hindering President Bush. The vice-presidential can-dictates are also very crucial in the 1992 election. Through his public appearances, Gore is coming across as a "wise choice," said Anderson. He is highlighting his "credentials [and] charisma." He is also relaying the fact he and Clinton work well together. Quayle, on the other hand, is speaking in separate terms from his running mate, Bush. Anderson believes that, at the vice-presidential debate, Quayle's attacks did nothing to hurt Gore. The fear appeal is being used by all running. Bush and Quayle are- saying that Clinton has no experience. Clinton and Gore are stating that Bush has only dug the nation into a deeper hole. Perot. maintains that the government needs someone new. All three are relaying to the public that the others cannot be trusted. Perot especially stresses that the people cannot trust anyone already in politics. The last days of the campaign will be crucial. Each candidate will be making their best attempts to persuade the voters that they are the best candidate for the job and it's up to the public to decide who really is. 501 MAIN AVE.
