Summary:Spotlight: Spotlight: Spotlight: Spotlight: I had the experience of interviewing Nick Burg, a writer of little renown, for the SPOT-LIGHT. The following took place in Mr. Burg's chateau nestled snugly in the Ozarks. He explained that the chateau's surrounding land-scape provides a picturesque background for stimulating ideas: barren rocks and an uninhabited area. Question:"In a recent article, you were behooved over the death of Seymour, your pet duck. Have you ever had any other pets? Burg: Heh! Let's not get personal, Buddy. What I do out of the dorms is my own business. Oh, you, mean animals (red face and over-coming embarrassment with a fake guffaw}. Yes. I once had an aardvark named Lassie. Actu-aly, I didn't realize it was an aardvark. I thought it was a collie. 1 used to be quite myopic. I also used to be quite stupid (no comment please). I didn't wise up until my ant farm was wiped out. Question: Were you ever out for any athletics in either high school or college? Burg: Yah Question: Do you care to elaborate? Burg: Okay. I went out for basketball in high school. I have an old injury that still nags me on damp or cold mornings. The way it happened was.I was sitting on the bench and the coach leaned over and told me to go in. In a frenzied fit I fell off the bench. I was almost a basket-case after that. I re-ceived the only MVP trophy in a sitting position. I learned quite a bit from athletics: on the first day of practice, the coach told us how sports builds individual-ity, initiative, and confidence. Then he told us to go out and do exactly as he told us. Question: Weren't you ham-pered by your height in basket-ball, and weren't you a little self-conscious of your height? Burg: NO! NO! NO! !!! What are you? A heightist or some-thing? I'm the average height for a Revolutionary War soldier. Also, I was not hampered by my heigh', in basketball. I always carried a German Luger in my athletic strap (can I say that?) and used it on smart alecs. I liked to think of it as my equalizer. I'm not self-conscious about my height-just about other people's height. Question: I see you're a senior majoring in English. What are your future plans? Where are you headed? Burg: To answer your first question—because I majored in English, I'm well-prepared for many jobs. Robert Frost taught me about apple picking; Faulk-ner taught me to be obscure; Salinger taught me how to be a reclusive child lover. I also plan to write a book about either a Great White Whale or a Shark. In answer to your second question-I'm going to the bath-room. Excuse me.
