A 1972 survey of 150 superintendents and princi-pals in Minnesota aimed at finding whether hiring offi-cials of public schools found grades (GPA, grades in methods courses and the grade in student teaching) necessary information when hiring a first year teacher. Those officials rated the personal interview most im-portant, the student teach-ing supervisor's recommen-dation second most impor-tant, and the grade in student teaching was next in line, the third most important consideration in hiring a new teacher. Overall GPA was eighth on the list of factors; it was considered less important than the letter of applica-tion, personal word of a supervisor or the placement director, and the recom-mendation of the college's student teaching supervi-sor, plus the three most im port ant factors listed a-bove. In fields other than educa-tion there is also a tendency to look at the person as a whole, rather than his GPA alone, Hanson said. He sum-marized "it's not the per-son's GPA, it's his attitude toward his GPA." How do employers regard pass-fail options taken when they see them on a student's record? A study on pass-fail made by Walther Prausnitz show-ed that most businesses and graduate schools have no objections to a limited num-ber of pass-fail courses, Hanson said. Hanson emphasized that work experience in the field is very important. Employ-ers are especially interested in the amount of practical experience the applicant has had in areas relating to his prospective job, and how well he did there. For example, students in-terested in pursuing a car-eer in journal ixm should definately work for the Con-cordian said Hanson, rather than rely solely on an Eng-lish major for credentials when looking for a job. The Placement Office is working on internship pro-grams that would provide more opportunities in field-related work, but so far the program has been offered in limited areas, Hanson said. He hoped Placement will be able to expand their intern-ship offerings in the future.
