Summary:February 19, 1999 Arts&Entertainment 13 •RAVE from page 12 j^Meanwhile, people who actually came to bowl were irritated by the distractions of smoke, strobe and dance lighting, the loud and furiously energetic techno, and all of the ravers dancing near the lanes. It began to look like an early Reese's Peanut Butter Cups ad: "Whal's your rave doing in my bowling alley?" "Well, what's your bowling alley doing in my rave?" ^/:X>:^y^^:t:\":z±^:1'-'-^-l::>: ".;.•* Even the managers of All Star were beginning to push ravers around and warn them about where they could dance. . . Some Concordia students showed up to.bowl and looked to be extremely uncomfortable and out of place. Again, it was the clash of such extreme cultures. The Cobbers simply hadn't been exposed to the rave community. '. - S On a positive note, the music was incredible. The DJs played off what little crowd they had and spun some of their personal favorites. A highlight of the night was noel, who put together a slam-ming set of harder trance, industrial-style drum ' n ' bass and sped up jungle techno. With so few people in the place, noel said he just wanted to spin some of the stuff he's been lis-tening to. He didn't want to have to worry about who was going to dance to it because there was such little space to dance in. After noel, mark h. hit the floor with incredibly fast hardcore techno, spinning in favorites like Atari Teenage Riot and other Digital Hardcore. The set was not that well-received by dancers and several of the cuts and transitions were rough, but the music and the feel altogether would not be soon forgotten. The rest of the night saw the likes of DJs duece, roy g. biv, and .exe who filled the place with more danceable tracks and light and fast tradi-tional technc^;;£;^;r Toward the end of the night, those who real-' ized bowling was futile or the ravers who simply didn't want to tolerate the bowlers began to filter out leaving the place even more vacant. The Chris Boen "It began to look like an early Reese's Peanut Butter Cups ad : 'What's your rave doing in my ;i; bowling alley,?'" ^ remaining ravers took to the lanes and the floor and finished off the night with some good freestyle dancing. All in all, about 60 attended Sugar Bowl, which in retrospect, and at $5 apiece probably led to a pretty decent night. The future of Techno Bowl is unclear so soon afterward and perhaps the night was seen as a success to the DJs. Until then, Sugar Bowl remains in mind as one of those absurd moments where cultures clash and Cobbers go home shaking their heads in amaze-ment. I guess that if you expect to go in seeing another Maverick, then you might just want to rent that one instead. Telleen's Opinion: In "Bravcheart" we learned, "Every man dies, not every man truly lives." Shorten that poetic verse to simply, "Every man dies," and you have the new movie "Payback." In this two hour gore-a- thon we sec countless people killed in a genuinely fun manner. I haven't seen this many sadists, gangsters and prostitutes since my last birthday party. All of these elements work to Payback's advan-tage, as it is a story about revenge and revenge only. Directed by Brian Helgeland who wrote the screenplay for "L.A. Confidential" and written by Helgeland and Terry Hayes, "Payback" is basted on the novel "The Hunter" by Richard Stark. Some ideas are borrowed from the 1967 film "Point Blank" starring Lee Marvin which was also a take off of "The Hunter." The differences are enough however that most viewers will really appreciate the newer, sleeker style. Payback-*deals with one man's search for revenge on the people who put a price on his head. This movie is actually kind of fun to watch. Once you accept that there is no silver lining in this cloud, you let your mind expand and you start to warm up to some of the charac-ters. My only problem with this film is not in its script, in its style, or in its content. My problem lies with Mel Gibson. To me he is too much of an actor/comedian to take such a tough guy role like this. Maybe four Lethal Weapon films can account for some of this prob-lem, but to me I just kept waiting for Danny Glover to pop out and say that he is "too old for this." as he does like clockwork in every other one of his films. Gibson is a good actor and an enjoyable one to watch in this film. I just would rather see someone else try and pull this one off. Perhaps our gen-eration does not have a Lee Marvin or William Holden equivalent. Maybe our generation is too hung up on the pretty face syndrome to allow real tough guys any screen time. I don't know the answer, but I don't know that Gibson is as close as we have right now. Word to the wise: If you are feeling like you are in the mood for "Message in a Bottle" or "Stepmom," stay away from "Payback." lexLch 20 Minute Sessi StaaeHi SpeckU SUNDAY lams AT THE u live performance scries Sundays from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM PlainsArt Museum • ' • • 704 I st.
