Summary:Page 16 April 21, 1972 Letter to the Editor A tribute to Dr. Hoppe, on leave next year As we close off another year at old C.C., the many memories of the past year seem to have a way of dominating our thoughts. Unknown to many who are not of, shall we say, the "elite", a cer-tain Concordia professor is taking leave next year and will not be around to overwhelm his students with his great knowledge of Ralph Waldo and a certain loveable white whale. I, who have had the great privilege of studying under this great literary genius and humanitarian, would like to express my sincere and devout appreciation for his brave and valiant efforts above and beyond the call of duty. I have dedicated this poem to him. I thank you Dr. Ralph Hoppe. Over the dormant English class The faithful teacher stands; The teacher, a mighty man to pass, With large and sinewy exams; And the rustle of his brawny tests Are realities of his hands. His hair is hip and almost long His face is like the sun; His brow is wet with honest sweat, He yearns whye'er he begun, And looks the whole class in the face, Is your paper done? Week in, week out, from morn till night, You can see his bellows blow; You can hear him scribble his correcting pen, Which measures pass or no, DIAMOND RINGS juit fa you at TTladsen's fieweltV Like the great divine judge of all, When the evening sun is low. And students going home from school Look in at the open door; They love to see the "Flaming Forge," And hear the bellows roar, And catch the burning marks that fly, Like chaff from a threshing floor. He goes on Sunday to the church, To forget about his boys; He hears the parson pray and preach, He hears the "Oversoul's" voice, Singing in Nature's choir, And it makes his heart rejoice. It sounds to him like his student's voice, Singing in Paradise! He needs must think of him once more, How for the grade he cries; And with his hard, rough pen he writes, This you must revise! Toiling — rejoicing — sorrowing, Onward through life he goes; Each morning sees some task begin, Each evening sees it close; Something attempted, something done, Has earned a night's smoke. Thanks, thanks to thee, my worthy friend For the lessons thou hast taught! Thus from thou, the "Flaming Forge' of life Our misfortunes must be wrought; Thus from thy resounding lectures shaped Each burning "A" and whaling thought. —Henry Worthless Wrongfellow HOME OF KEEPSAKE DIAMONDS** REGISTERED DIAMOND RINGS 627 - l i t Avcnu* North, FARGO Were you born to fly ? LAMMI STATE OF MINNESOTA COUNTY OF CLAY IN FIRM FOUNDATION COURT, LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT DIVISION IN RE ESTATE OF an unnamed mem-ber of the gradauting class of 1972, April the 30th. The representative of the above unnamed person, having filed for this final account and petition for settlement and al-lowance thereof and for distri-bution to the persons thereunto entitled, is now on this 21st day of the month of April, 1972, making public his last will and testament before going on into the cold, cruel and fascinating world we all live in. Being of sound mind and body, the unnamed member of this will and testament would like to offer the following gifts of value, practicality and come what may to the following bene-ficiaries: TO: The education department —the ability to revamp the de-partment to fit the needs of the students, to teach something worthwhile, to deal more with human relations, to get honest and more gut level when teach-ing about drugs, and to set up a schedule for who brings the coffee and treats and for who parks where, and more money; TO: The theatre—the ability to use the humanities auditorium for what it was meant to be, to produce more than two major plays throughout the entire school year with the help of paid staff and directors, cleaner facilities that are odor free, and more money; TO: The physical education de-partment — competent leaders who will produce the best quali-ty of a winning hockey band that will continue in the high degree of musicianship that has been the tradition of the past, another Chester from the high-rise, and more money; TO: The Concordian—the hopes that the editor will last more than one semester, and enough money; The unnamed, now not being of sound mind or body, does not have all of these things to offer. One good thing is that he will not be around to find out what happens. He will be gone from this place, a place where sugar beets smell the air in the fall, where the Red River is patho-genic, where people are good, where even Tiny Tim will come and sing, where alumni always return—with a little more mon-ey. At best, everyone keeps smiling. OR MELICHER Optometrist Telephone 232-8353 1st Ave. & Roberts Street Fargo, North Dakota CONTACT LENSES GONDOLA PIZZA FREEDELIVERY FREE COKE 1 Qt.
