FLICKERTALE July/August, 1994 MULTICULTURAL AWARD NOMINATIONS OPEN Nominations are being accepted for the Gale Research/American Library Association Ethnic Materials Information Exchange Roundtable (EMIERT) Multicultural Award. The deadline is December 1. $1,000 and a citation donated by Gale Research Co. is given annually to a person from tiie library world in recognition of outstanding achievement and leadership in serving the multiculturalAnultiethnic community with significant collection building, public and outreach services to culturally diverse populations, and creative multicultural materials and programs. An 18"x24" poster translates the Pledge of Allegiance into sign language, providing an image to engage children's imagination, and spark interest in deaf culture and American Sign Language. "Sound and Hearing: Understanding the Hearing Impaired" is a packet of materials designed for upper elementary teachers that includes activities and lessons about the mechanics of the ear and deafness. Her book, "Images of a People: Tlingit Myths and Legends" was selected as one of the winners of the "Second Anne Izard Storytellers' Choice Award." Mary Helen Pelton is Assistant Dean of Continuing Education at UND and is President of the North Dakota Center for the Book. DOPP NEW LIBRARIAN AT ENDERLI1 Susan Dopp, a former teacher in the Enderlin school system, has accepted the position of head librarian of the Enderlin Municipal Library. She replaces Charlotte Helgeson who has moved to East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Susan Dopp SCffiNCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATORS SELECT BEST BOOKS The annual bibliographies "Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children" and "Notable Children's Trade Books in the Field of Social Studies" are now available from the Children's Book Council. The lists include books written primarily for children from kindergarten to eighth grade, are fully annotated, including bibliographic data and suggested reading levels, and are divided into subject categories to help teachers and library media specialists locate new titles of particular use and interest to them. ISBNs for all available editions are included. The Children's Book Council, Inc. is a not-for-profit association encouraging the reading and enjoyment of books for young people. Its members are U.S. publishers of trade books for children and young adults. Reprints are available from the Children's Book Council, 568 Broadway, Suite 404, New York, NY 10012. Single copies are $2.00 and require a stamped, self-addressed 9x12 envelope with 3 ounces postage, and designated either Attn: "Science List" or Attn: "Social Studies List."
