Summary:Newsletter of the North Dakota School for the Deaf. to go to a basketball game. We watched the game which the Coyotes; won. After the game, I invited Debra to eat some pizza. I had a good time during Christmas vacation. —Lynn Arends Muskrat Trapping On December 22, my brother, Lee, asked me to go along with him and ride in the pickup. He brought a stick and flashlight. When we arrived at the field, Lee and 1 got out of the pickup. Lee said, "I put gopher traps in five muskrats' houses under the water." I kept running to the musk- rat's house and checking. There was; nothing, so we checked five muskrat houses again. It was the same thing: nothing! So, we went back to the pickup. I felt so tired because I had run so hard and the wind was; blowing very cold. Next, morning Lee went to the musk- rat house again. He got two muskrat;. Lee got a total of 13 muskrat skins and sold them to a fur store. The hides were worth about $1.20 each. He got 15 dollars, I felt the muskrat':-; fur. Boy! It was so soft and it could keep anyone warm! —Laurie Titus Christmas at Home I made some wreath cookies for Christmas day. Grandma and Grandpa came to our house duung their Christmas vacation but they slaved at our house only Vfa days because they had to work at their cafe in Kenmare. My brother came io stay here only one day, too, because he had to work in an auto body shop in Minot. We were surprised when we went to (lie basement and saw a new pool table! Then we played on il and watched each oilier. We didn't ride the snowmobile because il was broken. We left it in our garage, instead. Dad was busy working in his office for the S. & 11. Co. After Christmas, Mom and 1 took the decorations off the evergreen tree in our mobile home. —Terry Wobbema Enjoying My.vlf at Home December 21. my parents came la NDSD and watched the Christmas program. After the Christmas program was over, James Egland, my FEBRUARY 1973 parents and I went home and stopped at Hillsboro to have some supper at the Country Kile-hen. We arrived ill Fargo that night and took James Egland home. When we arrived at our house, my dog, Buff, was so happy and excited to see me thai lie jumped at me. Christmas Eve, we opened our presents. I received one sweater, a jumbo calendar, a Snoopy calendar, a book called Marquis De Mores and another book called Dick Tracy. I always enjoy reading Dick Tracy com ics. I received some other small items and I got a shooting gallery from my brother. My parents ga\e me a heritage wooden box. 1 had a nice Christmas Eve. I rested, worked, visited soma relatives during thc two weeks am! I had a nice Christmas vacation. —Mike Olson Christmas Vacation During Christmas vacation, 1 practiced basketball in tlie Red River Gym. Just as before, 1 got sick to my stomach and 1 vomited. Renae, David, Steven Michelson, and 1 went to Gary French':-; house in Grafton. They invited us to eal turkey. Gary and f rode their Cat snowmobile. Red River High School's basketball players went to Devils Lake and invited me along. We rode in the bus; Red River won. —Gary Sagstuen TWELFTH GRADE 20,000 Leagues Under (lie Sea About 1866, a captain wrote a letter to Mr. Aronnax, a learned scientist who was from a museum in Paris. The captain invited him lo a long voyage on his; ship. During the course of their voyage, the men on the ship said they saw a narwhal BO the ship chased il lor a long time. Suddenly it turned and sped toward the ship and sank it. Aronnax, his servant, Conseil, and Ned Land, a harpeoncr, found thai they were silting on 111'- narwhal. No, it was nol really a narwhal! It was a submarine that had sunk Ihc ship! The men from the submarine cap tured (he three men and look them to Ihe cabm. .Soon a man named Captain Nemo met them. He talked to Aronnax aboul his submarine. He showed that thc panels could be open ed and there was a strong window through which they could observe their travels. They saw BO many things under the sea. He let the three men wander freely in his; submarine, He had a library and Aronnax loved it. He read many books and wrote about being beneath the sea. 'Hie submarine traveled for a long time. It almost wenl around the world. Meanwhile Ned Land was; angry because he wanted lo be free. He planned to escape with Conseil and Aronnax and they all agreed on a plan. Ned and Conseil gol into a small boat beside the submarine. Aronnax walked past ihe library quietly, but Captain Nemo saw him and exclaimed, "Oh, God! Enough! Enough!" Aronnax was frightened and ran to (lie to)) of the submarine. He jumped into (he boat. The three men escaped and were free just in time, because the submarine sucked under in a large whirlpool. Aionnax was very glad to be free, but no wondered about Captain Nemo, Was Captain Nemo seeking revenge? Aronnax hoped thai peace would come to Captain Nemo. —James Egland Good Times During Vacation Before Christmas Day, 1 wenl to see my friends, and my brother ami sisters enjoyed watching Ihc basketball games. My family went to church where the kids showed their program, and after the program, we opened our gift;. On Christmas Eve, the family went to our grandparent's; house to which my grandparents; invited all their relatives. After thai, I Wenl '.a see a show. I asked my friend lo go with me, bul she didn't want lo so 1 wenl over there- with only Lynette along. Most of the lime 1 cleaned our house and did the dishes. .Sometime:, I watched Ihe pro football games and read the newspaper. One day 1 journeyed to Bismarck wilh my mom, sister and grandparents so l could sec a photographer lo take thc pictures of myself lor graduation. A week later, l received the proofs which I showed to my relatives, Then I iiiadc- a lis! of mv relatives' and friends' names so I could know how many pictures lo send lo them. l had a wonderful time with my family and friends. 1 think Ihal I should start to work on mv lessons until school closes in THE BANNER 15
