The theatre has seating for over 1,200, approximately 150 standing places and 3 balconies. After the Republic of Latvia gained is independence in 1991 from the Soviet Union, the National Opera House was closed for reconstruction until September 1995. Riga is the capital of Latvia, located on the Dvina River and the Gulf of Riga. It dates back to the late 12th century AD when German merchants established a community there.
