Summary:Nesheim Township from Lewis 0. & Caroline Larson Dec. 10, 1897 for $1100. The farmstead was located on the SEVi where he built a frame house to replace a sod house. This frame house was damaged by fire in the late 20’s and was replaced by the present stucco structure. Mr. Clauson pur­chased SE'/i of Sec. 32 from Syver Syverson on June 20 1902, and the NEy„ of Sec. 32 from the Dakota Land Co of South Dakota on March 5, 1908. Later, he purchased the NW>/4 of Sec. 29 known as the “Spade Quarter”, which later became the property of Dr. A.O. Arneson and his wife Gertrude. Upon his death she became owner and after many years their daughter Katherine had acquired it from her mother and sold that quarter to Floyd and Loraine Lar­son in 1982, who are the present owners. Iver was active in township and local affairs. They were members of the Norway Lutheran Church south of McVille. Inga Clauson was active in the Norway Ladies Aid. Iver died Jan. 8,1926. Inga and her sons, Ivan and Chris, continued farming the place for many years, until she moved to McVille to reside. Inga was a resident at McVille Friendship Manor from 1975 until her death July 6, 1980. She had her 97th birthday there March 10, 1980. Iver and Inga were parents of five children. Bella (Mrs. Bryan Wright), who lived in Indianapolis for over 40 years, now lives in McVille at the West Acres Apartments. Chris Clauson now owns the farm and lives in McVille. Lila (Mrs. John Kuffel) lives in St. Cloud, Minn. Jessie (Mrs. Ole S. Larson) lives in McVille at the Cedar Ridge Apart­ments. Ivan Clauson died in May 1965. Iver Clauson also had four children by a former mar­riage. Minnie (Mrs. A1 Huss) is a resident of Bethel Home at Williston, N.D. Helen (Mrs. Roy Olson) lives at Hatton, N.D. Ida (Mrs. Arthur Boostrom), deceased. Clarence Clauson, Minneapolis, Minn., deceased. John Fretheim Born in Allamakee County, Iowa, Aug. 29, 1884, John Fretheim grew to manhood in Iowa, and farmed in McKen­zie County, N.D. for 17 years before moving to McVille in 1938 where he farmed until retiring in 1957 and moving into town. He married Elma Helgeland, daughter of Sarah and Anfin Helgeland, on Jan. 12, 1927. She worked as assistant cashier at the State Bank of McVille in 1913. Elma died in January, 1956. On June 24,1962, John married Mrs. Gladys Nyberg. Gladys was the daughter of Albert and Christine Johnson, born April 10, 1907. She was a McVille High School graduate and entered Nurses training at the Deaconess Hospital in Minneapolis and graduated as an R.N., working in Minneapolis for several years before returning to McVille. She married Carl E. Nyberg in 1935 and he passed away in 1951. Gladys and John Fretheim were married scarcely a year before she died in March 1963. John Fretheim did not have any children and died at the age of 84 on Oct. 20, 1968. They are interred at the Sheyenne Cemetery, rural Pekin. Lars S. and Hannah Helgeland Lars and Hannah Helgeland Lars S. Helgeland was born Nov. 28, 1858 in Lafayette County, Wis. He moved to the Sheyenne Valley in 1882. He married Hannah Tenold in 1894 in Iowa. She was born March 17, 1868 in Northwood, Iowa. Lars was a state senator. He was elected in 1912 and died in office in 1913. He had also been a county commissioner and treasurer. Hannah died in 1922. One child remains of this union and that is Henry of McVille. Deceased are Simon, Emma, David, William and Guy. Ragnvald (Ray) Hogan Ragnvald Hogan Ragnvald (Ray) Hogan was born June 3,1894 in Norway. He was employed as a hired man by Svenung Quanbeck and then by Mrs. Alma Arneson from 1924 to 1947. After that time he worked as a custodian at Central School in Devils Lake. He retired to the Skyview Apartments and passed away April 16, 1981. Lars and Ingeborg Helgeland Lars I. Helgeland was born April 19, 1864 in Northwood, Iowa. His wife, Ingeborg was born Aug. 4,1874 in Lotviet, Norway. Lars arrived in a covered wagon in 1881 and settl­ed along the Sheyenne Valley in Nesheim Township. Lars died Feb. 27,1928. Ingeborg died Feb. 3,1955. They had two children: Gerda, who is deceased; and Esther, who lives in McVille. Louise Mueller Johnson Louise Mueller Johnson, step daughter of Robert Mueller Sr. of rural McVille, grew to womanhood of the Mueller homestead. Louise attended country grade school in Bergen Township and graduated from McVille High School. They she went to Mayville College. Louise taught school for many years, various places in North Dakota.
