POLIS DESCENDANTS William Polis and Emma Helgeland were blessed with twelve children: Ella, Matilda, Anna (Mrs. Willie Ryan), Ida (Mrs. Oscar Johnson), Roy, Edwin, Mable (Mrs. Schindele), Oscar, Cora (Mrs. Raymond Rutten), Thelma (Mrs. Fred Nelson), Arthur and Evelyn (Mrs. Norris Nelson). Cora Polis was born at rural McVille in 1%8 and attended school in Nesheim Twp. and McVille area. She married Raymond Rutten of rural Devils Lake. They farmed for some time and later moved to Lakota, where he was a dealer for International Harvester Co. They have retired and spend their winters in Arizona. Arthur was born at rural McVille in 1912 and attended school in McVille and Nesheim Twsp. He married Sylvia Fakler of Beach, ND. They have one daughter, Arietta. In 1916 the Polis' moved to Wildrose, ND. This was where their youngest daughter was born: Evelyn in 1919. The family moved back to Nesheim Township and she attended schools there. In 1924 the father retired and they moved into McVille. In 1940 they moved into Pekin. Evelyn married Norris Nelson June 24, 1953. They lived in Lakota for some time and two sons were born there. Later they moved to Larimore, ND. Norlyn lives at home with his father. Evelyn died of effects of a car accident July 1, 1978. Terrance is at West Point, New York. Thelma was born November 1, 1910 at home south of McVille and attended rural schools in Nesheim Twp. and McVille. She went to work at Lakota in 1929 as cook and waitress at Craise Hotel and Roy's Cafe. She married Fred Nelson June 24,1931. Fred was born September 11, 1%1 in rural McVille in Center Township area, to Mr. and Mrs. Gunerius Nelson who had come to Dakota land in 1898 to Center Township were his folks lived their married life. Fred had three sisters: Mable (Mrs. Harold Anderson), McVille; Clara (Mrs. Ole Johnson), Lakota; Myrtle (deceased); and a brother, Neil. Fred came to Lakota in 1926. Thelma and Fred had four children: Wesley was born in 1934; died March 15, 1978. He had married Doris Tullaifson and they had three children: Kim, Nancy and Steve. Wesley worked for Ottertail Company and they live in Devils Lake, ND. Muriel Ferris of Dallas, Texas has four children: Randy, Jay, Sherrie and Tammy. Bonnie Stokes of Omaha, Nebraska has two children: Tom and Dawn. Fredrick married Jan Boyd of Beach, ND and has one child, a son Michael. They live at Cottage Grove. MN. In June of 1%7, Fred was honored by the Lakota Commercial Club for his interest and active part he had taken in civic affairs, having served on the Draft Board, City Council, Fire Department and president of the Wild Life Club. Fred worked as driver for the Wagness Oil Company. He was elected Nelson County Sheriff which he served from 1936 to 1940 and was relected 1958-1965, when ill health forced him to retire. He was owner of a farm and garage and had been employed on the Alaskan Highway. Fred passed away at Devils Lake Nursing Home at the age of 67 in 1%9. God Bless his memory and for having given the Community a man like Fred for the betterment of Nelson County. Thelma, his widow, lives at 216 Village Ave. No. 48, Devils Lake, ND. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Nelson Sr., Bonnie Nelson Stokes, Muriel Nelson Ferris, Wesley, and Fred Jr. Cora (Polis) and Ravmond Rutten 236 Scanned with a Zeutschel Zeta book scanner at 300 dpi.
