She came to America in 1902, also settling in Griggs County. They moved to McVille in 1907 where John was the foremost building contractor in those early times, overseeing the building of the Community Hospital, Lutheran Church, Anderson's Market, several homes and rural buildings. They were members of the Lutheran Church and John was a charter member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge of McVille. He passed away July 9,1925. They were the parents of five children: Harold, who died in childhood; George, died January 30, 1979, in California; Helen Marie (Mrs. John Gigante) died March 29,1%8, at Clif- fsidePark, New Jersey; Earl, Kennedy, MN; Jeanette (Mrs. Howard Hanson) Kennedy, MN. Bertha Halvorson married Maurice Sandstrom in 1929 and moved to Brooklyn, NY. She died at Albany, NY, on August 26,1964, at age 82 years. NELS AND ANNA HELGESON Nels Helgeson came to America in 1866 to Goodhue, MN, and to Center Twsp. where he filed on land in 1882. He married Annie Burkland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Burkland, in 1892. She was born September 26, 1875. They farmed in Center Twsp. until his death in 1936. Annie moved to McVille the same year and lived in the house her father built many years before until her death on November 2,1960. JohnH. Halvorson Mrs. John Halvorson JOHN AND BERTHA HALVORSON John Halvorson was born May 14, 1878, in Gjesasen, Norway. He emigrated to America in 1%3 and came to Griggs County. On May 17, 1%7, he was married to Bertha Ommun- 160 LARS S. HELGELAND FAMILY Lars S. Helgeland was born November 28, 1858 in Lafayette County, Wisconsin. He moved to the Sheyenne Valley in 1882. He married Hannah Tenold in 1894 in Iowa. She was born March 17, 1868 in Northwood, Iowa. Lars was a state senator. He was elected in 1912, but died in office in 1913. He had also been a county commissioner and treasurer. His wife Hannah died in 1922. Two children remain of this union; they are Henry and Guy Helgeland of McVille. ND. Deceased are Simon, Emma, David, and William. Scanned with a Zeutschel Zeta book scanner at 300 dpi. Edited in Multi-page TIFF Editor.
