Charles R. and Marie Gress Halbert Marie was born to Ray and Josephine Hermes Gress on their ranch south of Gladstone, Stark County, North Dakota, December 7, 1929, the youngest of seven children. Marie attended Gladstone Public School through, the sixth grade and St. Patrick's parochial school in Dickisnon in the 7th and 8th grade and graduated from Dickinson Central High School in 1947. She attended Dickinson State College from 1947 to 1949 and was active in chorus and the college annual and newspaper staffs. In June, 1947, she was elected the first "Queen of the Air Fair" at the Dickinson Airport. While attending college she was editor of the Dakota Flyer (later the Dakota Editor of the Central Flyer) two monthly aviation magazines that are now defunct. She was a licensed pilot. In April of 1949 she was named Society Editor of the Dickinson Press, a position she held for two years. She was a feature story writer and photographer on the staff of the Williston Herald from 1956 to 1958 and head librarian of the McLean-Mercer Regional Library in Riverdale from 1964 to 1967. In California she was employed by the Escondido Times-Advocate for 11 years and is presently employed by the Los Angeles Times in San Diego, where she has been for the past four years. Marie married Charles Halbert (former Dickinson Parks and Recreation Director) January 20, 1951. They have three children: William and James Halbert and Dacotah Halbert Bowe, all living in San Diego County, California. The Halberts lived in Velva, North Dakota, where he was coach and high school principal for five years. All three children were born during that five year period in Minot. Mr. Halbert was also coach and principal in Bainville, Montana, for two years. He was Superintendent of Schools in Flaxton, North Dakota, from 1958 to 1960; in Taylor from 1960 to 1963; and in Riverdale from 1963 to 1967. In 1967 the family moved to California. Mr. Halbert has been with the Poway, California Unified School District since 1967. Emmanuel and Anna A. Arnold Haman Anna A. Arnold was born December 14, 1916, in Gladstone, North Dakota, and was the eldest child of Peter and Magdelena Arnold. She was followed by eight brothers - Ernest, Peter, Frank, Anton, John, William, Raymond, Walter - and one sister, Helen. Ann married Emmanuel Haman, who was born June 23, 1905, in 1938 at Dickinson, North Dakota. They moved to Fromberg, Montana. Later they moved to Great Falls, Montana, where Emmanuel worked at various jobs before moving back to Fromberg where he retired. Ann remained in Great Falls where she worked at the Ideal Laundry for 19 years before she became employed at the Montana Deaconess Medical Center where she has worked for 14 years. Ann had four children - Johnnie, Donald, and twins Elaine and Dwaine. Johnnie was in the Air Force for four years spending some time in Reykjavik, Iceland (1956-57). He worked as a carpenter in Great Falls. Johnnie and Marilyn have five children - Mike, Robert, Daniel, Paula, and Dwaine. Donald, now self-employed in Great Falls, was in the Army for three years stationed in Bambert, Germany, for twenty-seven months. Donald and Bonnie have three children - Dawn, Annette, and Bruce. Elaine and Gary Raty have three children - John, Tonya, and Tammy. Gary is self- employed in Billings. Dwaine and Janet had two sons - Tommy and Todd. Dwaine is a sheet-metal worker in Vaughn. Ann also has three great-grandsons. Ann and her brother Ernest attended a country school for two or three years before enrolling in the Gladstone Grade School. Ann had to quit school much to her regret at the very young age of thirteen to help raise her brothers at home after her mother died. It was during the depression and times were very hard, but the family made it through them quite well. Ann recalls when she was about nine years old, she and another friend were to take some young children up to bed at a wedding dance while the elders were dancing in the granary. Finding no room to lie down, they decided to sleep in their father's car. They did not know the bride and groom had a car just like it. All were quite startled, especially the bride and groom, when the girls woke up and asked if they were almost home. By then they were quite some distance away from home and the honey- mooners had to delay their honeymoon to take the sleepy youngsters back home. Richard and Lucille Heinle Richard and Lucille Heinle and their three sons moved from their farm south of Hebron to the Catherine Laub farm in August, 1969. Lucille and the boys live there. The twins, Gary and Galen, are 1974 graduates of Dickinson High School. Mark graduated in 1980. Besides raising and feeding a small herd of cattle, Gary is employed by Fisher Sand and Gravel as a heavy equipment operator. Galen is employed by Dolajak Manufacturing as a welder. Mark is presently employed at Dolajak Manufacturing on construction. Allen and Gwen Heiser Allen and Gwen Sickler Heiser Allen Heiser, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Heiser, grew up on a farm 15 miles north of Dickinson. He attended St. Joseph's Grade School and graduated from Trinity High School. Allen married Gwen Sickler November 16, 1979. Gwen, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Sickler, grew up on a farm 15 miles north of Gladstone. She attended Gladstone Elementary and graduated from Trinity High School. Gwen and Allen make their home in Dickinson where Allen is employed by Candee Construction. They have one child, Justin, who was born March 27, 1981. Conrad and Barbara Kurtz Herold Conrad Herold was born September 10, 1900, in Lefor, North Dakota, on a farm 19 miles south of Gladstone, son of Andrew and Katherina Herold. When Conrad was young, he worked on the farm. His father passed away in 1913, but his mother stayed on the farm until 1920 when she moved into Gladstone. In April 1921, they moved to California where he worked on chicken ranches, in a hay bailing crew, and in a cannery. In July, 1923, he went back to Gladstone to get married to Barbara Kurtz on August 7, 1923, at the St. Elizabeth 166 Scanned with a Zeutschel Zeta book scanner at 300 dpi.
