Mr. Tapley was a loyal worker In the Methodist Church, a charter member of the Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Eastern Star and various other organizations. He served as W.M. of the lodge in 1917 and was W.P. of Order of Eastern Star for several years. He served on the school board in 1912 when the new school was constructed and the original four room frame building was offered for sale at a public auction. He served as Mayor, and was instrumental in getting a water works system for the city. In 1937 Mr. Tapley moved to Staples, Minnesota where he opened a Ben Franklin Store and operated it until 1948 when he sold his business to his son-in-law, F.W. Perry. That winter he vacationed in California and was returning when he was kUled in an automobile accident near Stroms- burg, Nebraska. Edward Tapley and Mrs. Fairfield (Tapley) Perry, son and daughter, live in Minnesota, Freadrich Sauter MR. AND MRS. FREADRICH SAUTER Freadrich Sauter was born November 11, 1863 at Ros- enfield, South Russia. His wife Rosina (Essig) Sauter, was born June 22, 1869 at Rosenfield, South Russia. They were married November 11, 1890, Sauter served as a captain in the Russian Army. In 1894, Mr. and Mrs. Freadrich Sauter and two chUd- ren came to the United States. They settled at Wishek, N.D. for several years. In 1897, the Sauter family came across the vast prairie by horses and wagon team, bringing all their possessions including 1 cow and 12 chickens, and they homesteaded in Sheridan County in Boone Township, many miles from the nearest town. Freadrich Sauter seen a town grow from open prairie to a hamlet called Clark on one side of the railroad track and Dudley on the other, both which later became the present city of Goodrich. Eight children were born to this couple: Fred, Augusta, Emma, Caroline, Louisa, Edward, Paul, and Reinhold. Mrs. Sauter passed away April 19, 1902. On January 15, 1903, Freadrich Sauter married Dorothea (Rieger) Sauter. She was born May 23, 1873, in Russia, She came to the United Stated and lived in Bowdle, S.D. until she married Freadrich Sauter and came to Sheridan County. Seven children blessed this marriage: Rose, Emma, Otto, Alvin, Tillie, Walter, and Leona. Sauter helped to build the first school house in Boone Township. The Sauter family were members of the Peace Lutheran Church in Goodrich, and he helped to build the church building in 1905 and was active in the church. Freadrich Sauter passed away Feb. 11, 1934 and his wife passed away May 30, 1966. Martin Melvold MR. AND MRS. MARTIN MELVOLD Martin Melvold was born In Rena, Osterdalen, Norway on November 11, 1864. He attended school in his native land and cam? to the United States in 1882. He settled in Beloit, Wisconsin. Later he went to Chicago where he was employed by the Fairbanks Morse Co. In 1901 he came to North Dakota and homesteaded nine miles south of Anamoose. Tillie Smestad was born at Redalen, Norway, May 1873. She came to the United States in 1890 and settled in Chicago. Later she came to New Rockford and Harvey where she was a cook in the Dompier Hotel for many years. In 1902 she homesteaded south of Anamoose. Martin Melvold and Tillie Smestad were married July 2, 1904. They were the parents of five children; Emma Brower, now of Leeds, North Dakota; Nora Paulson, presently of Jamestown; Alice Melvod of Anamoose; Melvin of Lodi, California, and Selmer of lone, California. They started farming with a team of oxen and later with horses. On April 9, 1915 during spring work a prairie fire destroyed the barn, five horses, calves, chickens, hay and feed. A new barn was built during the summer. In the early 30's Martin bought his first tractor, Melvold retired from active farming in 1940 and Alice, his daughter, took over the management of the farm. Martin and Tillie Melvold were baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and were members of the East Scandia Congregation. When that congregation was discontinued they joined St. Martin's Lutheran Church at Anamoose. The Melvolds celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in July of 1954. Tillie Melvold passed away May 7, 1958, and Martin Melvold died April 26, 1960.
