County seat: Grafton. Area: 1,282 square miles. Ward—Named for Flon. J. P. Ward, territorial legislator of 1885. Organized in 1885. Created in 1885. County seat: Minot. Area : 2,054 square miles. Wells—Named for E. P. Wells of Jamestown, banker and financier, and territorial legislator of 1881. Organized August 28, 1884 (originally called Gingras). Created Jan. 4, 1873. County seat: Fessenden. Area: 1,293 square miles. Williams—Named for Hon. E. A. Williams, pioneer, and prominent citizen of Bismarck. Organized in 1889. Created Jan. 8, 1873. County seat: Williston. Area: 1,238 square miles. TOWNS IN NORTH DAKOTA WITH ORIGIN OF NAME Absaraka—A corrupted form by the Sioux of the Crow word Ab-so-ro-ke, or Sparrow-hawk people. Abercrombie—After Fort Abercrombie. Postoffice established as Ft. Abercrombie on August 26, 1860, with Jesse M. Stone, postmaster. Acorn—The fruit of the oak tree. Acton—After a town of that name, a suburb of London, Eng. Adams—After Adams county, Wisconsin, from whence came the three earliest settlers in the Adams vicinity. Adrain—Named after Adfain, Michigan. Addison—For Addison Leech, Sr., pioneer settler and member of the state constitutional convention in 1889. Akra—Named after Akra, Iceland. Alkabo—A coined place name derived from alkali and gumbo. Agate—Named after the moss agate stones found over North Dakota. > 1 Alamo—In the Spanish langi%ge means poplar. First called Cottonwood Lake. Alexander—McKenzie county. For one of the most distinguished territorial pioneers and noted politician, Alexander McKenzie.
