702 The North Dakota Indians the wild life in the Badlands and the Grand Canyon of the Little Missouri. D. E. Willard, an early instructor in the Mayville State Normal School and later with the Agricultural College at Fargo, studied the geology of the state and in 1902 published his book, "The Story of the Prairies." A survey of the "Flora" of North Dakota was made by Herbert F. Bergman and published in 1918 in the Sixth Biennial Report of the North Dakota Soil and Geological Survey. A U. S. Biological Survey of North Dakota was made by Vernon Bailey, biologist, and published in 1926. It records three life zones in the state. The Kodak was invented in the early '90s by D. H. Houston, a local attorney of Hunter, N. Dak. Pie coined the trade name "Kodak" from the proper name "Dakota." His invention is now known and used all over the world. The first telephone exchange office was opened in Fargo in 1881 in the old Headquarters Hotel, with 50 phones in operation. B. Inman was the first manager, and Miss Belle Thompson (Mrs. C. E. Webster) was the first "hello" girl. In 1881, C. E. V. Draper established a telephone service in Bismarck. His first venture being to connect up two hotels in that city. In 1885, he successfully established a long distance line between Bismarck and Washburn, the first one in North Dakota. He was a son-in-law of Col. C. A. Lounsberry, and is recently deceased. Viljulmar Stefansson, the noted Arctic explorer, was born at Mountain in 1879, and was a student at the State University in 1901. Plis parents were Icelanders and members of the colony from Iceland which was founded there in 1878. Ben Eielson, the famous aviator who has performed service in Alaska, the Arctic and Antarctic regions, is a native of North Dakota. He is of Norwegian descent and his parents pioneered and live at Hatton. Adjutant General G. A. Frazer of the North Dakota State Militia, is a great grandson of the Canadian explorer who discovered and named the Frazer River in Northwest Canada. In March, 1884, a public visiting committee to the Jamestown public schools awarded for excellence in general proficiency a gold pencil, donated by A. McKechnie, to Curtis D.
