McClelland, later the noted general, was placed in command of a second party and ordered to proceed to Puget Sound, and survey east through the Cascade Mountains until they met the main party. Gov. Stevens was ordered to examine carefully the geography and meteorology of the whole intermediate regions, the fauna, the flora, the climate, the rains, the snows, the passes of the several mountain ranges on the route, the soils of the several sections, the character, as avenues of trade and transportation of the Missouri and Columbia rivers, collect every species of information regarding the feasibility and practicability of railroad construction, and visit and establish friendly relations with the several Indian tribes and secure safe passage through their lands for himself and party.
