And Its Pioneers 317 County Commissioners State Association in 1924. A. F. Belcher was president of the North Dakota State Fair Circuit in 1922. A. S. DeVoice of Sykeston was appointed a member of the North Dakota State Barbers Examining Board in 1919, and was their secretary and treasurer during his term of office. L. W. Miller of Harvey was chosen vice-president of North Dakota Kiwanis Clubs in 1928. In July, 1920, the first Alaskan Air Expedition of the U. S. Army with Capt. St. Claire Strutt, Flight Commander, with four airplanes, flew from Minola, N. Y., to Nome, Alaska, 4,500 miles, in 53 hours and 30 minutes time. On July 25 they flew from Fargo to Portal, 290 miles, in three hours and ten minutes. They reported that under 4,000 feet they found the air remarkably bumpy, possibly caused by very recent storms, but above that level they found the air as smooth as velvet. They followed the line of the Great Northern Railway through Wells county. Henry Mathis, son of Frank Mathis, a Cathay township pioneer, his wife and three children, were drowned at their home in California during the terrible floods there in February, 1928. Fessenden A. O. U. W. Lodge No. 8 was organized on Tuesday evening, February 4, 1896, by Deputy Grand Master Workman C. R. Flint, of Jamestown, with 27 charter members and the following first officers : A. J. Smith—Past Master Workman. Louis M. Anderson—Master Workman. E. S. DeLancey—Foreman. E. F. Volkmann—Recorder. Fred J. Iwen—Receiver. T. W. Crissman—Overseer. E. H. Wiper—Guide. Wm. Brownlee—Inside Watch. A. E. Speiser—Outside Watch. Trustees—T. S. Hunt, Chas. R. Turnbull, and Mark E. Wilson. P O. O. F. Lodge No. 54 of Fessenden was instituted on Friday evening, April 3, 1896.
