Description
Summary:self employed, he became interested in operating a store on the corner of Main and Richter Avenues in my home town, Sheyenne. At this location, J.W. Richter, founder of the town of Sheyenne, had operated the first general store in the 1880's. Records indicate that he sold his store building to Simon Nelson in 1892. Mr. Nelson operated the store until 1899 when he sold it to C.E. Evenson who continued until the 1920's. Later it was run under the management of the Farmers Cooperative and still later, Pete Bottem operated it for several years. During the many years the building had been enlarged. This property was empty when my husband decided to make a try at the store business. About this time, H.C. Flaskrud began to think of retirement; we were able to buy several of his showcases, one of which we've donated to the Sheyenne City Museum. A year later we purchased the building from the Simon Nelson estate. The abstract of title conveys the original grant and ownership of this pioneer store building as J.W. Richter, Simon Nelson and Alfred A. Gray, owner of Gray's Variety Store. Here we wholeheartedly struggled along for 32 years, making part of the building our living quarters. For the first few years it became necessary and helpful to operate a cream station in the back compartment. Our store also became one of the daily bus stops between Jamestown and Devils Lake and also a distributing place for the daily newspapers. Although reared in the Presbyterian faith, Alfred became confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Pastor A.M. Swanson. He served the community as president of the school board and as clerk of the town board. In 1971 the residence located at 217 Sheyenne Avenue became our home, where I still reside. Alfred died December 10, 1972. His funeral was at Grace Lutheran Church of America with Pastor Hubert officiating. He is buried at Riverside Cemetery. The City of Sheyenne acquired ownership of the first general store in Sheyenne, established in 1887, from Hilda Gray in 1975. Sheyenne City Library is located in the front part of the building; Kathy's House of Hair is located in the rear compartment. The second floor apartment is occupied. Thus this pioneer building continues in service to the Sheyenne community. Our daughter, Dorothy Ann, married Thefiold Debele, June 12,1955. Their wedding took place at Grace Lutheran Church of America with Pastor Paul Gustafson officiating. A grandson, Tommy Jay, was born August 2, 1968 in Grand Forks Deaconess Hospital. They make their home at Kramer where they met while Dorothy taught Junior High. They are now engaged in farming and the raising of Polled Herefords.
