Mr. and Mrs. Bill Brandt Bird Miller and Hilma Brandt on Brandt's back steps. WILLIAM BRANDT FAMILY Bill Brandt was born on a ship just entering New York harbor. His folks were returning to Kitchener, Ontario after visiting relatives in Georgia. Bill stayed in Kitchener until about the age of 10; he found himself with neither home nor family and he took off to wander the country by himself. He traveled mostly bumming his way on boxcars and the men who rode these cars from place to place looking for work watched out for the boy and shared as they could with him. In later years no bum asking for food at the Brandt home ever went away empty-handed. He came to Sheyenne in 1889 at the age of 14. He made friends and stayed. He homesteaded on land now owned by Sigurd Nyhusmoen. Once he was given three lots in the little town of Sheyenne in payment for some work for Bill and Mayme Milne. Later he built a house on those lots and they are still home for the Brandt family. Mrs. Brandt was Katie Nentwich of Long Prairie, Minn. She came up to Sheyenne to work as she had relatives nearby. There were four children: Eugene, Fred, Louise and William. Eugene covered most of the Pacific area when he was a seaman in the Merchant Marines working on freight ships during the war. Afterward he continued as a seaman sailing to a wide variety of ports. Eugene is now retired and lives in Tacoma, Wash. Fred Married Thelma Alfstad and they had four children: Karen, Karol, Shirley, and James. Fred passed away some years ago. William married Mary Thompson of Portland, Ore. and they still live there. Bill is a longshoreman. In North Dakota, Louise taught country school and also taught at Webster, St. Thomas, Oberon, Ft. Yates, Warwick, Mott, and Rock Lake. She taught one year in the state of Washington, one year at Pendelton, Oregon, and also in New Mexico among the Pueblo Indians. Out of the continental United States, her teaching took her to Bethel, Alaska, where she taught the Eskimos for five years. The second Mrs. Brandt was Hilma Seagren of Sheyenne. They were married just prior to the Second World War. She had a son, Vincent Seagren. Mr. and Mrs. Brandt have also passed away as has Vincent Seagren.
