Nelson is the son of Melvin and Katherine Nelson of Sterling, ND. John retired from the United States Air Force on September 1, 1979. He was a Technical Sergeant and worked as an Aircraft Hydraulics Specialist during his 20 years of service. John was stationed in Japan, Korea, Okinawa, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Viet Nam, Spain, Turkey, England, Germany and Iceland. John met Glenda Johnson while he was stationed at the Minot Air Force Base. John and Glenda were married on September 18, 1976. They have one daughter, Wendy Rae, born on July 1,1977. John and Glenda lost two children in infancy, Cecelia and Joel Robert. They are buried in the Sterling Cemetery. John, Glenda and Wendy live in Sterling. HOWARD AND BARBARA JEAN MUNSON ZURAFF Howard Leonard Zuraff was born at the St. Alexius Hospital, Bismarck, ND, on November 9, 1951, to Henry and Mildred Hanson Zuraff of Sterling. Howard is the youngest of six boys and one girl—Harold, Donald, Dennis, Dean, Ronald and Dorothy. Howard grew up on a farm northeast of Sterling and Howard, Barbara, Jennifer and Troy Zuraff. attended the Sterling Elementary School. When Howard was in the eighth grade his parents moved to Sterling. He attended Bismarck High School. In April of 1969, at the age of 17 years, Howard moved to Kansas to work for a custom combiner and where he met his future wife, Barbara Jean Munson. Howard Zuraff and Barbara Jean Munson were married on January 10, 1970. They lived in Moscow, Kansas, and Howard continued to work as a custom combiner. Howard and Barbara have two children. Jennifer Lee was born on January 21, 1971 and Troy Leonard was born on January 20, 1975. On February 14, 1972, Howard's father, Henry Zuraff, Sterling, ND, passed away. In November 1975, Howard, Barbara, Jennifer and Troy moved to a farm south of Tryone, OK. Howard went into a farming partnership with his father-in-law, Herman Munson, and his brother-in-law. They farm nearly four sections of irrigated land, raising wheat and milo. Jennifer and Troy attend school at Turpin Elementary.
