The 1969 and 1970 teams both finished with the consolation championship in the state tournament. Doug Hanson, who played on all three teams, was named to the second team all-state unit in 1970. As girls athletics began to grow in the late 1960's, Northwood High School began girls track and field. They have had several people in each state meet since that time and finished in 6th place as a team in the 1982 state meet. Girls' basketball was brought back as a school sport in the fall of 1974 under Coach Lonny Hutchison. The girls have had winning seasons ever since, but are yet looking for their first state tourney entrant. The Northwood wrestling team of 1969 finished 3rd in the state Class B event under Coach David Strand. NHS's football team competed as 8 and 9-man teams until 1962 when it began 11-man competition in the Red River Valley Conference. It continued until 1979 when, because of fewer people in school, we began playing 9-man football in the Lake Region Sports Conference. In 1980 we made the state playoffs in 9-man football for the first time under Coach Otto Tyler. In 1954 and 1955 the N.H.S. Review won the Grand Forks Herald trophy for best printed paper, division II. This included competition from Montana, Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota. C. H. Schulstad was advisor. Past superintendents and terms of service are: George Hillier, 1901-1903; Franklin Thordarson, 1903; E. S. Youngdahl, William Clarm, L. E. Newell, Daisy Cluston, 1911-1919; G. T. Almen, 1914-1922; William Gamble, 1922-1926; George A. Baalson, 1926-1930; C. H. Backstrom, 1930-1934; Edwin Hauge, 1934-1935; G. O. Lindgren, 1935-1937; A. E. Severson, 1937-1940; J. C. Sethre, Nov. 1940-Dec. 1954; Robert E. Sheppard, Jan. 1955 to the present time. The Parent Teachers' Association was organized in 1947 with Mrs. Franklin Hagert as its president. Mrs. Einar Wall served as secretary. There were 127 members that year. Regular meetings were held and dues were 50£ per member. The P.T.A. undertook to start a hot lunch program for the pupils, sponsored a milk program and health clinics and made it possible for our people to hear and enjoy many music groups and other organizations from schools and colleges nearby. In November of 1970, because the group disagreed with the P.T.A. policy of sending money to the national organization, the group joined the Parent Teachers' Organization. On May 11, 1959, an election was held that reorganized the school districts in the Northwood area into a new school district called the Northwood Special School District No. 129. The new district included all or parts of the following school districts: Northwood #5, Avon #36, Avon #40, Pleasant View #50, Washington #68, Washington #69, Union #78, Fairfield #82, Northwood #83, Pleasant View #84, Avon #100, Union #101, Pleasant View #104, Loretta #108, and Lind #119. This made a total of 192 7/16 sections. In 1960 Logan Center annexed 21 3A sections. In June 1963 parts of Beaver Creek, Hatton #15 and Newburgh #1 were added. In July 1963 Grace #126 joined the district. Avon #36 annexed in June 1966 and that brought the total district to 249.87 sections. Since that time there have been several equal exchanges of property with other districts but the total number of sections has remained about the same. On July 2, 1959, the new school district was officially started with the seating of board members elected June 2, 1959. Arthur G. Bilden was selected president with Orville Bakken as vice president. Other members were Marvin Hjelmstad, Theodore Skurdell and Orren Lee. Carl J. Grotte was named clerk with Delia Haga as treasurer and school secretary.
