Gary works in Fargo for a construction company and Mary is employed by Elim Nursing Home in Fargo. HERMAN OLSON — MINNIE LARSON Herman Olson was born in Farsund, Norway in 1873. At the age of sixteen he followed his older brother to Sioux Rapids, Iowa. There they both worked, by saving their money they purchased tickets so the rest of the family could come to America. In 1903 Herman came to Richland County and bought the Gunderson farm, consisting of one and a quarter section. It was located four miles south and two miles east of Leonard, N.D. In 1909 he married Minnie Larson, she was born in 1888 in the same area. At a young age she began doing housework for the local residents including the Bukkin and Walberg families near Walcott, N.D. Later she served as an apprentice in an exclusive custom dressmaking shop in Chicago, Illinois. She became an accomplished seamstress. Herman helped with the construction of some of the homes in the area, especially the mason work in laying up chimneys. He also served as choir director in the Helendale Lutheran Church for a time. Minnie was appreciated by many of her neighbors for having assisted Dr. Huntley in home deliveries of their babies. Sometimes the snow storms would be so severe, the baby would come before the doctor. Herman and Minnie had four children. Ella, born in 1910 and Alma in 1911. Two children died in infancy. Clifford, born in 1914 and Hazel born in 1916. Ella and Alma both became nurses. Herman and Minnie built a four bedroom home in 1918. This burned in 1932 after which they built a smaller house on the same foundation which still stands. In 1943 they sold the farm to Howard Olson, and moved to Souix Rapids, Iowa, where they lived until Herman passed away all of a sudden of a heart attack, in 1946. Minnie remained in Sioux Rapids for a time and then moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, and later to California where she passed away in 1963.
