Variant Title: Your city, Grand Forks North Dakota ers and an attempt was made to organize the county. This meeting was held in the old Stewart Hotel, but owing to a scarcity of settlers the county officers appointed could not give the bonds required by law and the organization was not completed until the next year when the following men were appointed commissioners: D. P. Reeves, Alexander Griggs, and George A. Wheeler. The 1874 meeting was held in the D. P. Reeves house, now known as the Don Whitman house, which was moved later a short distance to its present location. (This is not the Reeves house later known as the Rasmussen House.) In 1875 the first tax was levied on property in the County, a 5-mill tax for current expenses. On July 5, 1875 the County Board first met as a board of equalization. In the following April a 2-mill tax was levied for building tbe jail. First officers of tbe new county: James Elton, Register of Deeds; Nicholas Hoffman, Sheriff; Thomas Walsh, Treasurer and Probate Judge; George A. Wheeler, Supt. of Schools; Thomas Walsh and D. P. Reeves, Justices of the Peace. Village Site One quarter section of land was given by Alexander Griggs in 1875 from his claim for the first village site with Third Street between Second Avenue North and Kittson Avenue as its business center. In 1880 a plat of ihe village showed the larger hotels with their proprietors as follows: Mansard House, Fourth St. and DeMers; Captain H. E. Maloney. Viets House, later Richardson House, now Hall Hotel; Frank Viets. Red River House, 'Third Street (Bruce and Division); James Hanrahan. Central Hotel, between Bruce Ave. and Fourth Street; J. B. Moosettc. Scandinavian House, cor. Kittson Ave. and Fourth Street; Henry Hallick. First Village Organization In 1878 the first village organization was completed with George Walsh, President; R. W. Cutts, Treasurer; W. A. Brown, Clerk; and John McRae, William Budge, and Frank Viets as Trustees. Post Masters and Post Offices Sanford C. Cady, appointed 1870—Cady and Loon Way Station John W. Stewart, appointed 1872—Stewart cabin, foot of Blue's Hill. O. S. Freeman, appointed 1873-—Same location. Alexander Griggs, appointed 1875—Griggs, Walsh and Company Store. D. M. Holmes, appointed 1877—Holmes Drug Store. Don McDonald, appointed 1879—Hudson Bay Company store, corner Third Street and Kittson Avenue, later in Gotzian block on Third Street. D. P. McLaurin, appointed 1888—Same location until 1893. John Bray, appointed 1892 In 1893 the post office was moved to the Union National Bank Building, corner Third Street and First Avenue North. In 1896 it was moved to 324 Kittson Avenue, present Friedman location. In 1906 the present Post Office ( Ted era 1 Building) was erected, corner Fourth Street and First Avenue North.
