Summary:Section 24; A. K. Sandven, the southwest quarter of Section 30; Fred Ruff, the west half of the west half of Section 32; Adam Enzminger, the east half of the west half of Section 32; Dan Flannery in Section 34; A. B. Hays in Section 26. Andrew Larson filed on the northeast quarter of Section 30 and after making final proof, he and Mrs. Larson went to Washington where they lived for awhile. Later they came back to North Dakota and resided in a rest home at Minot until both passed away in 1964. Charley Keuchker homesteaded. on the southwest quarter of Section 4. He raised livestock and did some grain farming and in 1934 sold his farm to Emil Schock and moved to Gary, S. Dak. R. J. Jones homesteaded on the southeast guarter of Section 12 and called his farm "Oakland Farm". He was married to Katherine Miller. Mr. Jones was born in Wisconsin in 1854 and settled in Kidder County in 1908. He was a breeder of Shorthorn cattle and Poland China hogs. Marion Montgomery filed on the northwest quarter of Section 22 on the shore of Lake George (Salt Lake). He and Mrs. Montgomery and family came from South Dakota by covered wagon, bringing four draft horses and four Hereford cows. They camped on the Thorie H. Haadem farm in Section 30 until locating his homestead where he built a basement house into the side hill. Mrs. Montgomery passed away while living on this farm and the four children were taken to Iowa. Rufus Miller and wife: Section 10. They did some farming and later moved into Tappen where he did blacksmithing. Lee Burgess filed on the northwest quarter of Section 10; Michael Fitzgerald on the north half of the north half of Section 18. Mrs. Oliver H. Knapp: Section 34, Tappen Township. Born in New York in 1851 and settled in Kidder County in 1901. Married to Adelbert C. Knapp. They were the parents of one child. She served as postmaster at Tappen and later as a practical nurse. Joseph Nowak: Farmer, Section 14, Grant Township. Mr. Nowak was born in Germany in 1868 and settled in Kidder County in 1908. George Patterson: Farmer, Section 22, Crystal Springs Township. Mr. Patterson was born in Iowa in 1875 and settled in Kidder County in 1906. He was married to May Dayton. They were the parents of four children: Belle, Violet, George and William. 1848 and settled in Kidder County in 1906. He was married to Lucretia Draper. They were the parents of four children. Melvin Ryder: Farmer, Section 4, Fisher Township. Mr. Ryder was born in Wisconsin in 1879 and settled in Kidder County in 1907. He was married to Verna Dean. Frank Scoville: Farmer, Section 24, Tappen Township. Mr. Scoville was bom in North Dakota in 1882 and settled in Kidder County in 1906. He was married to Amanda Nelson. They were the parents of one child. J. E. Stickney: Farmer, Section 12, Grant Township. Mr. Stickney was born in Wisconsin in 1882 and settled in Kidder County in 1910. He was married to Effie Gregor. Harry Cramer: Farmer, Section 4, Grant Township. Mr. Cramer was born in Michigan in 1881 and settled in Kidd,er County in 1906. He was married to Magdolena Bucker. Mr. Cramer was a stone mason by trade. C. C. Dorn: Proprietor of the Pipe Stem Ranch in Crystal Springs Township. He was born In Illinois in 1870 and settled in Kidder County in 1905, homestead.ing in Section 12. John D. (Bert) Godfrey: Farmer, Section 32, Crystal Springs Township. Mr. Godfrey was born in Iowa in 1882 and settled in Kidder County in 1906. He was married to Elizabeth M. Wagar. They were the parents of three children. Bert Tanner homesteaded on Section 26, Tanner Township, on the east shore of Lake George and he and a man by the name of Carpenter operated a sheep ranch. Tanner later bought Carpenter's interest. Lottie Burgess homesteaded the southwest quarter of Section 12 and taught rural schools for many years. She was married to Bert Tanner and they continued to live on his ranch until her d.eath in the early '30s. Helmer Ronning was born i,n Norway in 1877 and came from Minneapolis, Minn., to Kidder County in 1903 and homesteaded on the southeast quarter of Section 18 at this same time Thorie H. Haadem was located on the northwest of Section 30. After making final proof on his claim, Mr Ronning went west and sailed for Alaska where he built a log cabin and remained to enjoy fishing and hunting. He was a carpenter by trade. His favorite mode of travel in the neighborhood here was by skis. George Pence: Farmer, Section 13, Valley Township. Mr. Pence was born in Indiana in Joseph Stoulil homesteaded the southeast- quarter of Section 6 and the family made this their home for many years.
