Petersen came from Denmark in 1882 and spent a year in Minnesota with uncles, then settled in Dakota in 1883 on a quarter of land near the Sheyenne River, where he lived until 1953 except when he took a trip to our state capital, now and then his family relieved him from the care of the farm work so that he could "take it easy", so he died when near 95 years of age in 1953. He was a pioneer in the community as well as Dakota state. He came from Vilbjerg, Denmark. He married Hulda Tornlund in 1905 and leaves four sons, one daughter and a widow. EDWIN, MINNIE & SYLVIA POLIS Edwin, son of William and Caroline Polis, was born in the McVille area on Aug. 15, 1902. He married Minnie Tangen, Nov. 6, 1926. They farmed 5 years and then moved to Pekin and lived there until he passed away on Oct. 19, 1975. He was a plumber, mechanic and carpenter. He belonged to the Pekin Lutheran Church and the Fire Dept. Minnie, daughter of Sina and Andrew Tangen, was born in the Pekin area on Nov. 25, 1904. She taught school for many years, was clerk and then postmaster at Pekin. She retired in 1974. Her favorite pastime is working in her yard, sewing and bowling. She belongs to the Pekin Lutheran Church, ladies aid, senior citizens, Pekin Legion Auxiliary and Sons of Norway. Eddie and Minnie had one daughter, Sylvia. She was born in the Pekin area. She married Lars Hildre from Petersburg in 1947. In 1950 they moved to California, but returned to Petersburg in 1974. She passed away on June 12, 1977. She belonged to the Petersburg Lutheran Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of Norway. Sylvia enjoyed collecting antiques. She taught school in Bakersfield. Sylvia and Lars had three sons. Donald, his wife Carol and sons Todd and Donnie live in San Deigo, Calif. Lionel, died March 4, 1960. Scott lives in Petersburg, N.D., with his Dad and Mother Hazel. WILLIAM & EMMA POLIS William C. Polis was born on March 4, 1869, in Dodgerville, Wisconsin. He, his parents and a sister came to East Grand Forks in 1881. In 1882 they moved to Field Twp., Nelson County. Emma Caroline Helegland was born at Northwood, Iowa, on Nov. 22, 1872. She, her parents, and 3 brothers came to North Dakota in 1882. They homesteaded near the Sheyenne River in Nesheim Twp. Emma and William were married in 1892 by Rev. Lundeby at the Groom's home. They farmed in Field Twp. and in Nesheim Twp. In 1916 they moved to Wildrose and lived there 3 years, later returning to Nesheim Twp. In 1924 they retired and moved to McVille, but in 1940 they moved to Pekin and lived there the rest of their lives. Twelve children were born to them. Four sons and eight daughters. Those living are: Mrs. Anna Ryan, Devils Lake; Mrs. Raymond (Cora) Rutten, Lakota) Mrs. John Schindle (Mabel) Lakota; Mrs. Thelma Nelson, Devils Lake; Arthur, Stacy, Minn.; Oscar, McVille; and Roy, Pekin. Deceased are: Mathilda in infancy; Mrs. F. K. Thompson, Lake Lillian, Minn., 1929; Mrs. Ida Johnson, Corinth, Feb. 26, 1977; Edwin in 1975 and Evelyn in 1978. The Polis's celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in Pekin.
