wife to the sod house on his homestead five miles west of Orr. Arriving there in 1881, they lived there until 1892 when they moved to Burr Oak, Iowa. In 1904, they returned to Ferry Township, locating 2 miles northeast of Manvel. This was their home until 1916 when they retired and moved to Manvel, selling their farm to their son, Otto E. Andrew's wife, "Jane," was born September 25, 1857, at Bolders, Norway. In 1865, she came to Houston County, Minnesota, with her parents, 3 sisters, and a brother. Their sailing ship landed in Quebec in 6 weeks after being becalmed for 3 days on the Banks of Newfoundland. Andrew C. died in 1936, while his wife, Jane, lived until February 8, 1960, when she was 102. Jane's main hobbies were memorizing poetry and making quilts and spreads. She made hundreds of them by hand without glasses ~ even when she had passed the century mark. Her hearing also remained very good. When she died, she had 29 grandchildren, 81 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-greatgrandchildren. The Andrew C. Hoversons had eight children: Ella (Mrs. Elmer Headington) of Kuroki, Sask.; Lawrence, Orr; Richard (died 1921); Bertha (Mrs. Obert Stadstad); Emma (Mrs. Philip Olson); Otto E.; and Bernard, all of rural Manvel; and George, Manvel, who was the first white child -born in Ink- ster Township. The fourth Hoverson son who lived in the Manvel area was Ole C. Hoverson. When his father and brother, Hover, moved to Orr in 1881, he bought their farms and lived there all the time except for three years in Canada. In 1907, the Ole Hoverson family homesteaded in Kuroki, Sask.; however, they returned to their Ferry Township farm in 1910. Ole was born January 24, 1862. He married Alice Kingland in 1891 at Middle Grove Church. They had three sons: Albert (died 1916); Clarence (1893- 1957); and Otto A., who lives on the Hoverson family homestead. Ole C. Hoverson died in 1915, while his wife, Alice, (who was born October 4,1869, at Albert Lea, MN) passed away in 1950. ERNEST R. JACOBI -- Ernest R. Jacobi was born April 30, 1839, in Dusseldorf, Prussia. He came to America in 1861 where he engaged in copper smelting and mining in eastern Canada and near Raleigh, North Carolina. Ernest married Ellen Stevenson on January 2, 1866. Ellen was a sister of the Stevenson brothers of Ardoch and Manvel. Ii_ 1879 he came to Bellevue where he opened a drugstore. He later moved to Manvel. In partnership with his brother-in-law, Wm. Stevenson, he operated a general store, lumber yard, and grain elevator. Ernest Jacobi also homesteaded land in Turtle River Township. Ernest R. Jacobi's great-granddaughter is the movie actress, Jane Russell. SYVERT JOHNSON - Syvert Johnson, who was born May 19, 1866, in Hoi Hallingdal, Norway, settled near Manvel in 1882 when he was only 16 years old and began farming the following year. That same year (1883) he received his U.S. citizenship papers. On July 12, 1890, Syvert was married to Gurine Haugen at Manvel by Rev. Olaf S. Houkom. They received the first marriage license ever issued in Grand Forks County. Mrs. Johnson died on January 3, 1911. Syvert Johnson farmed near Manvel until the fall of 1919 when he moved to Grand Forks where he was employed as field manager for the Great Northern Life Insurance Company and later in a similar position with the Occidental Life Insurance Company until he retired in 1944. Mr. Johnson served as school clerk and was organizer and president of a rural telephone company. The Walle Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company was only 2 years old when Mr. A.C.
