description August: A check in the amount of $170 was presented by the American Legion Post to the Community baseball program. Maddock applies for 30 units of "low rent or elderly" housing. September .- Flax was "King for a Day" Saturday when 56 truck loads were unloaded at the Maddock Farmers Grain Co. between 7 and 11 a.m. Rice Motor 8c Supply held a "Quitting Business" auction sale on Saturday, Sept. 27. October: Dave Holje continued preparations to open Dave's Arctic Cat Sales south of town. The highest award to a Future Farmers of America Chapter, The National Gold Emblem, was presented to the A.S. Gibbens chapter at Maddock, at the National convention held at Kansas City. Gerald Wagner and Cliff Simek are the advisors. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Dalbak were honored Oct. 19 on their 60th anniversary at the North Viking Church. November: The public is invited to the dedication of the new school. Tours will be held Saturday and Sunday, November 29-30. This is Central North Dakota's most modern new school. The "SHACK", now used by the Maddock Teenagers-known as the Vincent store building, or to others, as the old Standard building, was the first school of Maddock. 32 were present when the first adult class was held at the Vocational Agricultural department at the Maddock School Novenber 25. The first class was on "Farm Law". December: A new electronic devise, useful for fast diagnosis of heart ailments, was installed at the hospital. 1970 January: A fund drive on behalf of the Memorial Hospital is set to begin this week. Miles Maddock, chairman, explains the hospital's needs resulting principally from wearing out and obsolescence of the equipment. A $36 million improvement program planned for 1970 by Northern Pacific Railway Co. includes a track rebuilding project between Oberon and Maddock expected to cost about $130,000. This improvement is necessary to permit the company to use the large 100-tons capacity covered hopper cars for grain hauling. These compare to 60-ton capacity standard box cars and are expected to become more general in use because of greater ease of loading; also, one hopper car can be loaded with two kinds of grain. February: Ansel Hakanson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Odell Hakanson, won honors at the Agricultural Engineer Show during the Little International at N.D. State University, Fargo. Hakanson, a junior, received first in the Farm Utilities division with his project entitled "Capacitor Discharge Ignition System." March: A lesson in benefits of consumption of milk was demonstrated to sixth grade students of Maddock school, using rats. During the project of several months, one rat was fed a typical human diet with milk, another was given the same food but without milk. The one given milk gained 60 grams more than the other rat. In the last published reports the Maddock Farmers State Bank showed capital accounts in excess of $6 million. A new organization, "The Benson County League of Cities", came into being Monday night at Maddock when representatives of eight cities met to ratify the bylaws. Elected chairman of the group was Mayor Arthur Wheeler of Maddock. April: On Sunday, April 5, the 100th birthday of Mrs. Jorgina Nottestad of Maddock will be observed. She will be 100 years old April 2. This 100th birthday is believed to be the first in Benson County since 1938. Mrs. Nottestad has attended the Golden Wedding anniversaries of four of her children.(She has 13 living children) They are; Mr. and Mrs. Emil(Marie) Engen, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob(Julia) Jacobson, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Nottestad, Mr. and Mrs. Russel(Tillie) Johnson. October: Martin Bratvold, Maddock woodcarver and inventor, at the age of 85, still rides this three wheel tricycle he made. Bratvold said he gets quite a bit of fun out of the machine. During the past eight years Martin Bratvold, a resident at the Maddock Senior Citizens Home, estimates that he has carved at least 5,000 items from wood, largely with an ordinary jackknife, which range from birds and animals to crosses, salad sets and hope chests. He has made three threewheelers, two of which he has sold, one for $35.00 and one for $42.00. From memory he has made miniatures of steam engines which he operated for many years. December: Rev.
