They are farming on the original Wm. Lengkeek farm. Jack was born here in 1932. He has a floral shop in Seattle, Washington. He has three children: Lynn, Mrs. Westbrook, Emmett, Idaho; Claude and Blaine, both of Libby, Montana. Fred Sarbaum served in the Armed Forces from August 5, 1918 until June 2, 1919, and was in France 8 months, saw action on the front lines. He passed away on February 15,1971. SARBAUM, HENRY AND MARY Henry and his son, Fred, arrived in Litchville by train with the household furniture, implements, and stock in January, 1905. Mrs. Sarbaum had arrived by way of LaMoure a few days earlier with six children. With much difficulty they traveled the distance to the John Hemmer farm, later known as the M. A. Schall farm near Litchville. The first year they lived in Litchville Henry conducted a dray line. They then purchased a farm in Greenland Township, and in the spring of 1906 built a house and barn and started to work the land. 40 acres were planted the first year. Prairie fires did much damage. The next year they planted a grove of trees. The children attended school in a one room building, later it was the Howard Taylor residence. They attended church in Litchville untila priest came to Marion and offered Mass, first in a farm home, then in the Woodman Hall until 1917, when the Catholic Church was built. The winter of 1910-1911 was very severe with much snow, the family was often in need of food and fuel but managed to surmount every difficulty. The Greenland School was built in 1917 and this offered the five younger children a high school education. Their children are: Christine (Mrs. Joe Melanson), Louise (Mrs. Frank Christensen), Walburgae (Mrs. John Trzpuc), Martin, Martha (Mrs. James Hallman), Henry, Anthony, Sylvester, Frances (Mrs. George McCarthy), Regina (Mrs. George Lillehoff), Louis, and two who died in infancy. Mr. Sarbaum died in 1924, Mrs. Sarbaum continued to live on the farm with the three youngest children until she died in 1937. SARBAUM, LOUIS AND DOROTHY Louis (Bug) Sarbaum, son of Henry and Mary Sarbaum, was born Feb. 2, 1913. He farmed and worked for Kost Excavating in Moorhead. On Oct. 20, 1944 he married Dorothy Matt, daughter of John and Ena Matt. Six children were born to this union. Marcia (Mrs. Willie Dunn) was born July 23, 1945, married June 25, 1965, three children, Shawn, Billy Joe, and Mellissa. They live in LaMoure and Willie drives a semi truck for Melroe out of Gwinner. JoAnn was born December 31, 1946 and passed away Feb. 2, 1965. Lonnie was born July 2, 1948, is married to Karen Rynestad, Grand Forks, June 1, 1973, has one son, Chad. He is employed by Haybuster Mfg. in Jamestown, where they reside. DeLoy was born July 10, 1949, married Pat Harmon, of Lake Wilson, Minn, on June 29, 1974. He drives a semi truck for Don Liebing and they live in Marion. Rodney was born Sept. 12, 1950, married Janice Gudmestad, March 17, 1973, and has one daughter. Shelly Gudmestad. He works for L&L Construction. They live on a farm between Marion and Litchville. Randy was born Nov. 27, 1955, is employed at Farmers Union Station in Marion and is substitute school bus driver. He lives in Marion with his mother, who is employed at the State Hospital in Jamestown. Louis died in 1966. SCHEEHEAN, WILLIAM M. AND ROSE William came to N.D. from Stillwater, Minn., in the 1890's with his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. J. Thompson. They farmed north of Marion for a period of years. He married Mrs. Rose Golden in 1907 and they lived in Marion, where he operated a Standard Oil Bulk station and also carried on his farming interests. For a time he managed the local theatre. He was always interested in sports and played on the baseball team. The family moved to a farm west of Marion in the early 1920's, where they lived for 17 years. Mrs. Scheehean died in 1929, and he made his home with his son, William, for a time and later with his daughter, Violet (Mrs. Harold Smith), until his death in June, 1946. They have another son Emmett. SCHEIBE, CARL AND ALMA Carl Scheibe and Alma Koessel were married in 1923. Two children were born to this union, Paul and Karlene. The Carl Scheibe family and Frieda Koessel lived on the Koessel farm, Carl doing electrical work. In May 1955 Frieda passed away. The Scheibes continued to live on the old Koessel homestead. Karlene and Paul graduated from the Marion High School. Paul graduated in 1951, then attended Wahpeton School of Science. Karlene graduated in 1955 and attended Valley City State Teachers College. Paul was married in 1954. They have three children and live in Palo Alto, California. "Karlene is married to Robert Frank and they have two girls. They live in Great Falls and are both teaching. Carl Scheibe passed away in 1965. Mrs. Scheibe made her home in Hope, where the Franks were teaching. Then she moved with them to Great Falls, Montana, where she still makes her home. Mrs. Scheibe comes back often to visit her old home, friends and relatives in Marion. SCHENECKER, JOHN AND BARBARA John H. was born in Tomah, Wis., in 1863, and came to Marion in 1890, where he homesteaded on land that is now the George Lillehoff farm. He married Barbara Orth in 1893 and they had six children: Mary (Mrs. Frank Stott), Grace (Mrs. Norbert Kemper), Albert, John, Frank, and Elizabeth. John carried mail out of Marion for 11 years and then moved to a farm six miles east of Montpelier. Barbara died in 1926 and John moved to Minn., where he died in 1950. SCHMIDT, JOHN AND MARY John Schmidt was born at Dubuque, Iowa, on December 4, 1857 and came to the Dakota Territory in the spring of 1880. He came to Jamestown, where he was employed on the building of the State Hospital for two years. He homesteaded in Sheridan Township in the spring of 1882. When he was in need of supplies, he would walk to Jamestown and seek employment there until he had earned enough to pay for them, then would walk home again toting his supplies on his back.
