GENERAL INFORMATION LOCATION Kindred is located in the extreme southeastern part of North Dakota. It is situated in the Sheyenne River Valley on Cass County north-south highway No. 15, one mile north of North Dakota state east-west highway No. 46, which forms the border between Cass and Richland Counties. In relation to larger cities in the vicinity, Kindred is located 25 miles southwest of Fargo, 105 miles south of Grand Forks, and 100 miles east southeast of Jamestown, all in North Dakota, and 250 miles northwest of Minneapolis, Minnesota. BRIEF HISTORY The first settlers arrived in the Kindred area in 1871 and established homesteads on land adjacent to the Sheyenne River. Most of these early settlers were Norwegians who had come from their homeland to relatives or friends who had settled in this country previously. The village of Kindred was founded in 1880 and named after the owner of the townsite, William S. Kindred, who had purchased the land from the Northern Pacific Railroad. The railroad was built in 1880 and two years later the first school was established in the town hall. The village of Kindred was incorporated by vote of the people on March 9, 1920 and became a North Dakota city in 1949 when they adopted the mayor-council form of government. Each succeeding year has seen improvements in Kindred. Today it is a trade center for a rich agricultural area. POPULATION Kindred has an estimated population of 625. It has been growing steadily for the past thirty-five years as shown in the following table: Current Estimate 625 1960 580 1950 504 1940 450 1930 429 ELEVATION AND TOPOGRAPHY Kindred's elevation is 938 feet above sea level. The soil is made up of a rich black loam which extends for miles in every direction, except toward the southwest, where the lighter soils are found. The topography is generally flat, slopes gently toward the northeast, and drains into the Sheyenne River. Because the Sheyenne empties into the Red River of the North, it is considered as a part of the Hudson Bay Drainage system. Scanned with a Zeutschel Zeta book scanner at 300 dpi.
