At the end of the Glacial Period the Scandinavian peninsula was more deeply submerged than at present; the land has risen since that time. In Norway the upheaval is distinctly marked by strand-lines or raised beaches, which are numerous along the coast, chiefly in the northern part of the country. When such strand-lines are observed along fjords penetrating far into the land it becomes evident that the rise increases from the coast towards the inland. Caves were hollowed out by the waves during the submersion, their bottoms mostly lying on level with the strand-lines. Of the numerous caves of this kind the one in Torghatten forming a tunnell through the mountain is most renowned. 35487 Article in Journal/Newspaper Torghatten NGU Open Archive (Geological Survey of Norway) Norway |
