N. The coast is surrounded by a girdle of islands and skerries. This archipelago is up to 50 km broad. Here are the islands Leka, Austra, Vega and innumerable islets and skerries. The ignous rocks occurring here are granite, gabbro, peridotite, and serpentine. Granitic rocks occupy a large area of the region, and the greater part of the high mountains consist of granite. All of them are younger than the adjacent stratified rocks. These are supposed to be of Cambro-Silurian age. The granite intersects the schists in dikes and veins, and it contains in many places fragments and flakes of the adjacent limestone and schists. For the most part the granite here has a banded or streaked structure. Its chief constituents are white to greyish feldspar and quartz. The micas often occur only subordinately. On the mainland the granite partially also contains hornblende. In several places syenite occurs in connection with the hornblende-granite. Here also occur other more basic varieties belonging to the gabbros. These have resulted as the last series by magmatic differentiation. In addition to hornblende the syenite contains to some extent pyroxene. This has been altered mostly to uralite. 35451 Article in Journal/Newspaper Bindal Nordland Nordland Northern Norway Vega Nordland NGU Open Archive (Geological Survey of Norway) Austra ENVELOPE(11.877,11.877,65.084,65.084) Bindal ENVELOPE(12.377,12.377,65.088,65.088) Leka ENVELOPE(11.709,11.709,65.089,65.089) Norway Nærøysund ENVELOPE(11.786,11.786,64.928,64.928)
