The area is located in westernFinnmark, northern Norway, between 70 degrees 10' and 70 degrees 31' Nlatitude and 12 degrees 40' and 13 degrees 50' E Oslo longitude. Thepurpose of the investigation was to study the rocks within a hithertomainly unexamined area of Precambrian rocks surrounded by Caledonianrocks. Portions of the area near the sea had been visited by a fewgeologists prior to the initiation of this investigation. It wastherefor quite certain that the rocks were Precambrian in age andconstituted a window in the Caledonides, but the size of the window wasunknown nor had most of the window been studied geologically. Thisreport establishes the Precambrian age of the rocks and delineates theboundaries of the window. The Precambrian rocks along the western coastof Finnmark were previously called the Raipas formation and known tooutcrop in (at least) two windows. As this report differentiates sevenformations which constitute two groups whithin the Komagfjord (thenorthernmost) tectonic window, it is purposed that the Precambrianrocks of the two windows be known as the Raipas suite. 36325 Article in Journal/Newspaper Alta Finnmark Hammerfest Komagfjord Northern Norway Porsanger Sennalandet Finnmark NGU Open Archive (Geological Survey of Norway) Alta Norway Porsanger ENVELOPE(24.956,24.956,70.052,70.052) Repparfjorden ENVELOPE(24.197,24.197,70.494,70.494) Raipas ENVELOPE(23.319,23.319,69.938,69.938) Komagfjord ENVELOPE(23.416,23.416,70.259,70.259) Stabbursdalen ENVELOPE(9.016,9.016,63.444,63.444)
